About Goto

On New Bridge Street in Exeter, Goto is a Japanese restaurant with a 20-dish menu spanning ramen, udon, and sushi rolls. The sushi arrives topped with mayonnaise, alongside a Sashimi Platter and a seafood ramen. Ramen and udon come with lettuce in the bowl, and the kitchen also turns out chicken karaage and tempura. Seating is walk-in rather than reserved, and the room fills up, so a table is not always guaranteed on arrival. Food tends to reach the table quickly once ordered. Goto opens Tuesday to Saturday and stays closed on Mondays and Sundays.

“I can confidently say this is the best and highest quality Japanese restaurant in Exeter. The ingredients, especially the fish, are always incredibly fresh. I've tried a few things on the menu, but my absolute go-to dishes are the spicy salmon sushi, chicken karaage, and the tempura. Their tonkatsu ramen is also amazing, served with a really flavorful broth and perfect noodles. On top of the great food, the pricing is very reasonable for the portion sizes. You can get a huge, filling bowl of ramen for just over £10, which is a great deal. If you love authentic Japanese food, you definitely need to try this place”

“Food was good and well priced. Atmosphere was chill, lots of staff for a Friday night. Didn’t need to put mayonnaise on the sushi, found this quite off putting. White wine was perfectly crispy and beer refreshing. Might not come back but didn’t have a bad time either 🍱”

“Best Japanese food I've had in the UK. The seafood ramed was delicious and the sashimi platter was exquisite. We enjoyed the sushi rolls too especially the spicy deep fried shoft shell crab.”

“We visited on a Saturday around 2pm without a booking and were lucky to get a table, though it’s definitely worth reserving in advance as the place gets very busy. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our visit. My wife ordered the udon and I had the tonkatsu ramen, along with miso soup and green tea. The miso soup was quite good, but we were surprised to find lettuce in both the ramen and the katsu udon. My wife lived in Japan for five years, and she mentioned that lettuce isn’t something you’d typically find in authentic ramen or udon dishes. Because of that, the noodles were a bit disappointing for us, as we were hoping for a more traditional Japanese flavour. We might try the sushi on our next visit to see how it compares, but based on this experience, the ramen and udon didn’t quite meet our expectations for authenticity.”
