Customer Review Summary
The lamb tagine emerges as the clear draw, praised repeatedly for tender, melt-in-the-mouth meat, though a few found it merely decent, with one reviewer likening the texture to cardboard and another calling the flavour too sweet and tangy. Close behind, diners return to shared platters and grilled dishes: a mixed grill and falafel, chicken shish tavouk with rice, a steak described as good while the chicken wings charcoal grill fell short of expectations, and Turkish-style platters with kebabs called flavoursome but not the best. Desserts draw consistent praise, with baklava and knafeh singled out, though one reviewer felt the knafeh wasn't to the standard they were used to. Several note friendly, attentive staff and a cosy setting, while others describe an empty dining room, loud inauthentic music, worn seating, or an inattentive waiter who never returned with drinks or dessert. One diner reported the food bland and lifeless on a repeat visit. The recurring irritation is payment: the restaurant is repeatedly described as cash only despite several reviewers expecting cards, though one reviewer notes staff produced a card machine when asked.

“Disappointing and utterly devoid of flavour – Fool me once, shame on you... This was my second visit to Al-Bader, and I deeply regret giving them the benefit of the doubt. After a mediocre first experience, I naively assumed it was just a case of bad luck on a busy night. However, this second visit made it glaringly obvious why the restaurant is almost always empty. For an establishment that claims to serve and honour Persian and Middle Eastern cuisine, the food is an absolute insult to those traditions. Persian cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its aromatic depth, rich layers of saffron, and delicate balance of herbs. What we were served here was completely bland, lifeless, and utterly devoid of flavour. It takes a shocking lack of effort to render these beautiful traditional dishes so entirely tasteless. To make matters worse, the pricing is utterly unjustifiable when compared to the abysmal quality of the food. You are paying premium prices for subpar, cut-corner cooking. I wouldn't return to this restaurant even if they offered me a complimentary meal. Save your time and your money—Coventry has far better culinary options to offer than this ghost town of an establishment.”

“Very clean place, very family friendly. Staff are so polite and professional. I would say best Arabic restaurant I have been to in England. Prices are so affordable”

“AMAZING food, and great service and atmosphere. There was a huge range of food, drinks and a few deserts. It was quiet, and the guy who served us was extremely polite and helped us choose some food. This restaurant is a hidden gem right in the centre of Coventry. DEFINITELY worth a visit!”

“Food wasnt too bad, it was so extremely hot, it scalded my mouth. Im accustomed to prunes in a tagine being cooked in the dish but these seemed to have been added as an after thought. We had ordered some tabbouleh but it was disappointing due to the absence of mint which I always thought to be 1 of the main ingredients. The restaurant was fairly cold and as nice as the waiter was, he was not very attentive, it took a long time for the order to be placed and once we had our food, we didn't really see him again nor were we offered any more drinks or dessert. Unfortunately I have visited Al Bader in Birmingham which was amazing and this branch falls short of that expectation im sorry to say.”
