About Bellapais Steak House & Greek Restaurant

Bellapais Steak House & Greek Restaurant on St John's St in Colchester brings a Greek menu into a steak-house format, and reservations are required. The grill centres on cuts such as the 22oz sirloin, 22oz T-bone, and 12oz sirloin, ordered off the menu alongside sides of chips, sautéed potatoes, broccoli, peas, and onion rings, with garlic butter and peppercorn sauce offered alongside. Desserts range from biscoffi cheesecake and hot chocolate fudge with ice cream to the baklava lemon meringue, a Greek-British hybrid dessert that combines a baklava base with a British pie staple, and that is the rarest, most category-defying detail here, as Greek restaurants don't typically offer lemon meringue, and a steak-house-Greek hybrid offering baklava in that form is genuinely unusual. Staff come to the table to take orders and check in during the meal.

Customer Review Summary

Steak is the clear draw, with reviewers praising a perfectly cooked 22oz sirloin with well rendered fat, a 22oz T bone, and a steak called tender. Garlic butter and peppercorn sauces, chips and onion rings come alongside, while biscoffi cheesecake, hot chocolate fudge, baklava and lemon meringue earn dessert praise. Staff are called pleasant and helpful, and generous portions leave one regular taking home a doggy bag.

“The best restaurant in Colchester. That's all I can say really. Our steaks were simply incredible.”

“Three of us visited tonight after work, I am S and old enough to be the grandparent of A apparently and she is an amenable young lady with reputed ties to the Clacton underworld, J is a 20 year old salesman with an Ego and appetite to match his testosterone levels. On entering we were given a warm welcome with Alex the waiter prompt to offer drinks and bring the menus and give honest advice ref portions with no corporate ‘upsell’ In no time at all we had ordered and the food was at the table within 10 minutes (we came straight from work and were first in). I had the 22oz sirloin which was perfectly cooked and was the size of a small country with well rendered fat- not for the feint hearted as this was a lot of steak , J had the 22oz T bone and his eyes popped out like a cartoon character as it was placed in front of him. A opted for the 12oz sirloin and the way she wielded that steak knife you could tell in another life she would make a good assassin (maybe not ‘in another’ if the rumours are true). We chose chips, sautéed potatoes, broccoli, peas and onion rings. Garlic butter sauce turned up by the gallon and a tsunami of peppercorn sauce for me. The table went quiet for a good 10 minutes as the challenge began and each delicious mouthful melted marvellously making music on our tastebuds. A quick unintrusive check in from Alex n back to the dinner. J had recently been abandoned in Wivenhoe by his best buddy who had left him like a lost boy in neverland to see a girl and his lamentable demeanour had been softened by the protein and calorie intake. A had snaffled her steak and was pushing the boundaries of sanity picking potatoes and polishing her pallet. I was satisfied and satiated. Now for the sugar hit. S went to biscoffi cheesecake land for a light creamy hit to bring him out of intensive food comary and A smashed the bejesus out of hot chocolate fudge with ice cream , J was done by the main but looked as happy as a kid after opening his Xmas presents. The steaks , chips , onion rings , sauces and desserts were the big hitters and the steaks as the big ticket items did in no way disappoint! Lovely atmosphere , great service by Alex but I heard on the grapevine that Karen needs the credit for teaching him like Mr Miyagi to the karate kid - If I could finish with a high karate kick I would but I’ve eaten so much all I can offer to finish is a smile and a thankyou for such a wonderful meal.”

“Just the best steak house! The staff are amazing. The last time I was there, I walked through with an engagement ring box, they couldn't have done more. Really is worth every penny, the food is brilliant. My favourite restaurant.”

“Have eaten here on a few occasions. Always found staff pleasant and helpful. Food excellent even took home a ‘doggy bag’ as there was lots of everything and I like to have a three course meal there which I can never eat all of. Far too good to waste 😀. I would definitely recommend this restaurant… what’s the saying, you get what you pay for here”
