Quick info
About Ruan Orchid
Ruan Orchid is a Thai restaurant at 14 Lower Bridge St in Chester, with beamed dining rooms on two floors: a smaller room downstairs and a larger one upstairs. The kitchen works from a large menu of Thai dishes, and a dedicated vegan menu runs alongside it, so vegan diners have their own list to order from. Pad Thai is a regular order, including a chicken and prawn version. Som Tam, the Thai salad, is also on the menu, and a hot paneang curry covers the curry side. Starters are part of the range too, so a meal can be built from several courses. Thai beer is served to go with the food.

Customer Review Summary
The criticism is more specific. A vegan couple found shrimp paste in the hot soup and egg in the Pad Thai, both from the vegan menu, and the replacement main had recooked tofu and oily noodles. Others find the dining room and long menu dated, mention a table with a metal bar across the leg space that was swapped when asked, and call the downstairs cramped and the toilets old. One reviewer notes that trying several dishes gets pricey.

“Absolutely beautiful. Been to Thailand many times & this is the closest I have gotten to feeling like I’m there. So friendly, delicious food & of course Thai beer.”

“The best Thai in the country! We have been travelling from Manchester the past 17 years to come here because we are always welcomed like family. They have catered for both my children from weaning toddlers to now- the food is always fresh and the chefs are exceptional. Thanks guys! 💞”

“Booked well in advance but was seated at a table with a metal bar right where my legs should go, making it hard to sit comfortably. Moved without fuss when I asked. The restaurant itself feels like it needs a real refresh - the menu is huge but looks like it hasn’t changed in 20 years, and the food, while fine and generously portioned, was presented in a pretty dated way. It’s not a bad place, and I can see why others love it, but it’s just not for me.”

“I can see and appreciate the high reviews as I'm sure when they get it right the experience would warrant 5*’s however this was not my experience. My wife and I are vegan and a lot of Thai food accommodates this and given they have a dedicated vegan menu i was excited and relaxed. Unfortunately shrimp paste in the hot soup (on vegan menu) and egg served in the pad Thai isn’t vegan. I returned my main and they replaced it quickly but the replacement clearly had the tofu recooked again and the noodles were very oily, I left most of it. If you are not vegan im sure this place is cracking but if you are I would not trust the menu. Sadley I won’t be returning .”

“The best Thai I've been to in the UK for a long time. A wide selection of dishes I've only ever seen in Thailand and lovely and spicy too. The sweetcorn cakes tasted home made as opposed to some what taste obviously shop bought and the spring rolls full to the brim. Can't wait to go back as it's the best”
