About Petit Roll
Petit Roll runs hands-on cooking classes from a spot on Capstone Road in Chatham, teaching small groups how to build sushi, shokupan and other Japanese staples from scratch. A typical session moves through sushi-making with Madoka, where traditional green tea opens the class and the finished rolls are packaged to take home, or bread-making that covers a fluffy shokupan, a katsu sando and a fruit sando. A vegan gyoza lesson and a ramen class, with noodles kneaded from scratch, round out the calendar. Attendees get a printed recipe folder to annotate as they work, and long aprons are loaned for the session. The same kitchen doubles as a sushi takeaway, and class members can pick up a Japanese rolling pin or shokupan tin to take their practice further. Sessions run on a walk-in basis.

Customer Review Summary
The sushi making lesson is what most reviewers describe, praising a teacher who demonstrates each step clearly while the group follows along. One group began with green tea and a talk through four sushi types, then ate some of their rolls alongside a traditional lunch the teacher prepared. Reviewers call the sushi delicious and authentic, and several describe the session as relaxing, welcoming, and educational, including first-timers. Close behind is the shokupan bread lesson, where reviewers made the dough, a katsu sando, and a fruit or strawberry sando, and one says mistakes were corrected without anyone feeling silly. Others mention making vegan gyoza and ramen from scratch, noodles included. Recipe folders or binders that students annotate come up more than once, and reviewers say they left with more food than expected. One group travelled for the bread class and went home with a whole loaf, while a sushi group took home extra rolls packaged as though bought from a takeaway.

“My wife Rachel and I recently attended a sushi-making class with Madoka at Pettit Roll in Chatham, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Madoka is amazingly knowledgeable, kind, and a wonderful teacher. She made the entire process so engaging, and it turned out to be a deeply relaxing few hours. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind, forget about everything else, and just focus on learning a new skill together. The sushi itself was absolutely delicious, and we came away with so much food that we’re still enjoying it now! It was a lovely experience all round. Thank you so much, Madoka—we couldn't recommend Pettit Roll highly enough!”

“Wow what an amazing time we had at the sushi making course! Madoka is an excellent teacher, we made loads of sushi that looked and tasted delicious! Highly recommend 😊”

“Our group of 6 just had the most wonderful sushi making lesson from Madoka. The session started with traditional green tea and a discussion of the 4 sushi types we would be making and the utensils and tools we would use, plus advice on sourcing ingredients. Madoka demonstrated each step very clearly with the group following in parallel. We each made more than enough for 2 people to eat. We used a small amount to complement a beautiful traditional Japanese lunch made by Madoka, and we took the rest home (with some of it beautifully packaged as though it was purchased in a sushi takeaway). A take away binder with ingredients and steps was provided at the start, which we updated with additional notes as we went along, and were loaned long aprons to wear during the session. I can’t recommend the course enough.”

“My wife and myself recently had a Sushi lesson with Madoka and what a pleasant and welcoming lady she is, the presentation that she laid on was second to none, it was our very first experience with Sushi and we could not have wished for a more professional experience, thank you so much for your warm welcome and treating us to such a pleasant and unforgettable day. We would highly recommend Madoka and her Sushi experience. 10/10.”

“I would highly recommend the Japanese bread making lesson with Madoka. It was an enriching experience for me because I learned deeper knowledge about the process of making bread. On top of that, I could observe her cooking techniques in different ways, which was a great benefit to me.”
