About Fat Hippo Cardiff
On Church St in Cardiff, Fat Hippo Cardiff is a hamburger restaurant from an independent burger group that started in 2010 with roots in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The menu runs to 94 dishes, built around beef and boneless buttermilk chicken patties that come with fries. Vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options sit alongside them, so groups with mixed diets can order from the same menu. Sides and starters include Trash Browns and Cheese Balls. The group describes its food as hands-on and messy, with flavours that lean playful. The kitchen at number 17 serves the full range under that approach. Dogs are welcome, so a visit can include the family pet.

Customer Review Summary
Burgers anchor the praise, with the Born Slippy, a double patty with braised pork rib meat, jalapeños and hot honey, singled out as juicy and well cooked. Close behind are the starters, especially the cheese balls with hot honey buffalo sauce and the Trash Browns, along with chicken tenders, tots, corn ribs and a Biscoff milkshake. Reviewers also mention about five vegan burger options and very generous portions, and many describe friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Opinions split on the chips, which one diner found too heavy on paprika and earthy while another liked them a bit spicy. Other complaints include lukewarm tenders, a bun that was not fresh, long waits for drinks, and music that was a little loud. Those seated outside describe waiting a long time to order, staff who seemed disinterested, and smoke drifting from a nearby bar. One group sent back a chicken burger that was not cooked through and got no apology at the table. Another diner recalls a server who checked ingredient details for a wife's intolerances and put her at ease.

“Really enjoyed our meal. We were in time for the hippo hour, great deal consisting of a starter, main and side for £15. I had the corn ribs for starter, American burger and tots. All the food was very tasty and well presented. The waiting time for drinks was quite long but the food was served quickly. The restaurant has a nice relaxing atmosphere. I would recommend this place and intend on going back.”

“Amazing food, best burgers we have had for a long time and the chicken tenders were lush too. We had amazing service from the lady with the pink/red hair-sorry we don't know your name, my wife has intolerances and she was incredible with her, finding out information and putting her at ease making it a great experience.”

“We visited here this weekend 29th August as a group of 7. Staff we mainly very friendly. Food was just OK, nothing special. Burger was good, skin on chips (not fries) were not great, too much paprika and tasted quite earthy if I'm honest, I didn't eat them all because of this. One of our guests had to return her chicken burger as it was still raw inside, the staff didn't seem overly bothered to be honest, not even coming to the table to apologise. All the other meals again were OK. I personally wouldn't go back here just because I think there is better out there.”

“Im a big fan of fat hippo and, before the London one closed i was a regular so when i visited Cardiff to attend a concert i took the opportunity to partake of their pre 6pm special. Alas the inside was full so was asked to sit outside, no problems as the weather was good. The 3 free tables were either dirty or covered with used plates etc and food so we chose the least offensive option. After waiting quite sometime someone put the menus in front of us as disappeared, and we waited and waited and waited even telling staff we wanted to order but to no avail. Eventually we were served but by this time we realised the main issue with being outside is the closeness to a local bar and therefore we were inhaling the outdoor smokers output throughout. Food arrived in decent time and mine was hot and fresh alas her chicken tenders werent that hot, the only minor gripe with mine was my bun wasnt the freshest and she said the same. Throughout the staff seemed disinterested but evidently busy. So the food gets a solid 4/5 Service and cleanliness 2/5”

“This small chain burger restaurant in cardiff is very good and serves good quality burgers and chips. Upon entering a friendly member of staff directed us to a table just outside the Main Street. I was expecting it to be busier because there was a concert on this specific Friday. The drinks in here are reasonably priced and they had a small selection of non alcoholic drinks which was usetul. They had about 5 vegan burger options. I went for the vegan chicken one with purple coleslaw. The drinks and food didn't take that long to be served which I was surprised at!!. The portion sizes in this restaurant are VERY generous so it's very good value for money!!!. The chips were so nice and a bit spicy which was good. Lastly when using the bathrooms they were not in brilliant condition and one of them were out of order and only 2 of the taps were working. Overall this burger restaurant offers very good value for money burgers and it's very filling and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a burger restaurant in Cardiff!!! 🥹🥹🥹”
