Quick info
About Orissa
Orissa is an Indian restaurant at 108 Risbygate St in Bury Saint Edmunds, run by one family since it opened in 2008. The menu spans curries, tandoori dishes and biryanis, with lamb korma among the curries. Garlic mussel gives seafood eaters a dish to choose, and the shashlick comes in chicken or lamb versions. Vegetarian and vegan options sit on the same menu, so a table of mixed diets can order from one kitchen.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are more pointed. Two reviewers found the curries too watery, one calling the chicken tikka masala watery, and a takeaway order arrived with dry, cold onion bhajis and samosas and only a few small pieces of chicken in the chicken curry. That customer asked for a refund and was told the policy offers only replacement food. Others mention a long wait for main dishes while popadoms came fast, a curry priced at £12/13 with rice, and one waiter described as aggressive and rude.

“Myself and Doyle continued adventuring across Suffolk and wanted to have a lovely Chinese but were rejected, but to our surprise an Indian cuisine was whispering into our ears. A lovely gentleman was waiting upon us and we was greeted near enough outside. We gathered our inventory and flew into the Indian. Food was good, service was super and the only slight adjustment was the food took a little bit but it was very nice so it makes up for it. We devoured the food and drinks and left very happy chappy. ORISSA you have done us well, and we look forward to our next adventure with our hands wide open and bellies empty. Yours sincerely, Doyle and Joao.”

“The food was decent and the restaurant looked nice, but the customer service completely ruined the experience. One of the waiters was extremely aggressive, rude, and unprofessional in the way he spoke and behaved. Instead of making customers feel welcome, his attitude made the environment uncomfortable and stressful. A restaurant’s service matters just as much as the food, and sadly this experience was very disappointing. I genuinely hope the management takes this seriously and improves staff behaviour, because customers should not have to deal with this kind of attitude while dining”

“Watery AF!! Wouldn’t recommend! We got the chicken tikka masala and Christ way too watery!! Absolutely disappointed! If you’re ever in the Richmond area up north amontola is definitely worth a go as their curries are divine, thick and worth the money!”

“Awful takeaway. The most watery curries we’ve ever had. Prawns were like shrimps, there were 10 tiny pieces of chicken in chicken curry, Onion bhajis were very dry. Both bhajis and samosas cold. Tried to discuss with restaurant and described food as inedible. They offered a replacement but I advised that a refund is required as the food is not edible and certainly do not want a replacement. Told them they could come and collect the food as it wasn’t being eaten. They advised it is not in their policy to offer refunds only more food. Why on earth would I want more food of this poor quality? Will go through bank to get money back as I am not accepting this.”

“Well. Best indian dining out I've had for a while. Staff are very welcoming and attentive and polite. Nice place to sit in, great background hum of others having a great time. The food, top notch level of flavours, really expertly done, could taste every spice and herb, the spicy heat took nothing away. You can eat the chicken and lamp with no worries because it is trimmed perfectly, no fatty bits. The mushroom side was addictive and nicely fresh naan bread. Great price as well, very good sized portions. Will happily return to try more off the menu. Thank you all involved, you are masters at the pans!”
