Quick info
About Carlito Burrito
Carlito Burrito is a Mexican restaurant at 12 York Place in Brighton, and the city's first Mexican-owned restaurant. Its tortillas, totopos and salsas are all made to order on site, drawing on family recipes and the flavours of the Mexican Pacific coast. The menu includes fish tacos and nachos served with house-made chips, and the kitchen also prepares vegan dishes. Margaritas are mixed with 100% agave tequila, organic agave syrup and home-made botanical cordials. The dining room is small, with colorful decorated walls and Mexican music playing, and guests wait at the door to be seated before ordering. The company has been cooking street food in the UK since 2010, after a stretch working European food markets and festivals.

Customer Review Summary
Fish tacos draw the strongest praise, one diner calling them the best tacos they have had, another pairing them with the volcano and flautas. Margaritas and a Michelada follow close behind, and the nachos get mentions for homemade chips that don't go soggy. Vegan choices come up repeatedly, including banana blossom fish and plant based chorizo. Reviewers describe a small, colourful, lively room with real Mexican music. The main complaint is one detailed account: a staff member working alone told a customer to wait for a table because of a sign at the door, the customer felt spoken to with hostility, left without ordering, and a sharp exchange followed. Others note a chill by the door and food on the pricy side. Several praise cheerful servers, one of whom asked how sweet to make a fresh lemonade.

“An awesome place, I just love it! I stumbled upon it by accident and -whoa! I love places that are super original, have cool decorations on the walls, are colorful, and have a lively vibe - it's totally my kind of atmosphere. The food was equally delicious, the service was fantastic (the lady working there smiled and joked the whole time), and the vibe was thoroughly Mexican. I was enchanted by this place and definitely recommend it! Unfortunately, I live too far away to visit again, but I have very fond memories of that time - this place is freaking awesome!”

“I barely said ANYTHING and was told I had “attitude”! I came down from London for Pride weekend and popped in for a burrito around 4pm. When I walked in, nobody greeted me. I saw the toilets at the back and an empty table, so I headed towards the counter to order first. A member of staff stopped me and said, “You need to wait for a table. There’s a sign at the door,” before directing me back to the entrance. Nobody had been at the door, and two women behind me also looked confused. I’d simply misunderstood how the restaurant worked. I’m dyslexic, so I wasn’t looking for signs. I had food and a full bladder on my mind. Not everyone processes written information in the same way, and a simple explanation would have been enough. To be fair, she appeared to be working alone, and I’ve worked in hospitality myself, so I appreciate it can be stressful. However, her attitude towards me felt unnecessarily hostile. There was no apology or acknowledgement that the system wasn’t obvious. I decided to leave rather than wait. As I walked out, she shouted, “With that attitude, you’re not going to get served anyway!” That was when I gave her the finger. Not because I’d arrived with an attitude, but because of how disrespectfully I’d just been spoken to. Later, as I walked back past the restaurant, I politely asked what attitude she thought I’d shown. Instead of answering, she asked, “Are you seriously back here to argue with me?” She claimed I’d “stormed out.” I didn’t storm out. I was hungry, desperate for the loo, had been told there was a wait, and decided to leave. That’s all that happened. The whole interaction was bizarre. A little patience, a clear explanation and some basic customer service would have avoided all of this. If you’re going to speak to customers with unnecessary hostility over an honest misunderstanding, don’t be surprised if that energy comes back.”

“We had a really nice server, the atmosphere was lovely and there was Mexican music playing (actual music not just stereotypical stuff) They were accommodating with food, asking us preferred sweetness for our fresh lemonade, and they also allowed my partner to adjust part of her order”

“We were craving fish tacos while visiting Brighton and stumbled across this fantastic spot. From the moment we walked in, everything was exceptional. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, and the service was warm, friendly, and attentive throughout. The Michelada was hands down the best I've had anywhere in the UK—an absolute standout. Every dish we ordered was superb, from the fish tacos to the volcano and flautas. The quality, flavour, and presentation were flawless across the board. I can't recommend this place highly enough. A true gem in Brighton, and somewhere we'll definitely return to on our next visit.”

“Carlito Burrito what can I say? Difficult to find a better Mexican place in Brighton. It’s small and I love that, the seats all comfortable with with cool cushions and decorations that truly take you away from where you are and give you an authentic Mexican experience. This is backed up by the incredible Mexican food, outstanding cocktails and genuine Mexican beers, this place is the only thing that makes me feel less guilty about the fact I have not yet visited Mexico. Steffie and Chloe were both excellent, reeling off the specials and going into great detail made me realise they care so much about where they work. They were having fun and being lovely engaging with every customer, honestly don’t think I’ve been treated so well. I already loved this place but thanks to Chloe and Steffie serving us I’ll definitely be back. I may be spelling that wrong haha. If you want Mexican food in Brighton come here first, no joke. Thank you to the chefs for the great food!”
