Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return mainly for the steak, with fillet the most praised cut, described as cooked exactly to the doneness requested, well seasoned and rested. Sirloin, wild deer and the Steak Sampler for Two also get mentions, and one reviewer calls the sampler great value. Close behind are the sharing nachos, sides like parmesan mash and dauphinoise potatoes, and desserts including churros, sticky toffee pudding, chocolate fondant and the Argentinian rice pudding. One parent singles out the chicken nuggets as homemade tasting. Service is repeatedly called attentive and friendly, and several anniversary and birthday tables received glasses of prosecco. The recurring complaint is space: tables sit very close together, and one diner had to put a water bottle and wine bottle on the floor because the two-person table was too small, while others heard cutlery dropping nearby. Smaller gripes include an extra drink charged by mistake, quickly fixed, and a wine bottle opened before reaching the table. One reviewer found no cocktails available, though local Scottish cider and ale were on offer.

“One of the best places I’ve discovered in a long time, with such high-quality ingredients and absolutely delicious food. I have two young daughters who have tried chicken nuggets in countless places, and these were by far the best! They tasted homemade, with plenty of juicy, tender chicken and just the right amount of crispy coating, perfectly seasoned. The burgers, starters and sides were all delicious, and the chocolate fondant was simply divine. The service was excellent — very friendly, attentive and efficient. It’s such a warm and welcoming place, with lovely staff and truly delicious food. I highly recommend it without hesitation. Although, I must admit, I’m already worried that everyone will discover this gem and there won’t be a table available when I come back! I’m definitely planning to return and try more of the menu. A real little gem — highly recommended”

“Ate at El Toro last night with my wife. Was absolutely brilliant and it has become our favourite place for a meal. The waitress (sorry, forgot her name) was great, very attentive and provided a top class service. The food was melt in the mouth stuff, I had a fillet and my wife ordered a sirloin. We ordered a few sides and finished with ice cream and creme bruleé cheese cake...yum yum! A really chilled and relaxed atmosphere was just perfect to enjoy an excellent meal. Thanks El Toro, we'll be back!!”

“I found this place in Bathgate near Edinburgh and booked a table for our 25th anniversary, so I was a bit concerned at the outset, I didn’t need to be. I drove the 35 minutes and found a car park around the back and was surprised at the really warm welcome and got a table and yes it was busy and a little bit “tight” but no wailing kids and a good atmosphere, now at the outset, I have been to hundreds of restaurants for business and if its crap Ill say so! Straight away, I felt comfortable and the staff were SO attentive and pleasant and there are so many places that have “customer blind spots” but here they couldn’t do enough and also not overbearing which was a high 9 in my book, well done! I did say it was our 25th over the phone and was met with a couple of glasses of fizzy something, wife enjoyed that! Now guy came around with a tray of steaks, including a tomahawk that looked pleased to see me, jeeze! So wife had fillet and being a “ in for a penny” I had deer, also one thing I do very well is grill a steak and after a couple of nice starters the mains hit the table and I was genuinely, what the flying! It looked great, someone knows what they’re doing here and what does it taste like? The fillet AND the venison was grilled to perfection!!! The contents on the plate were superb, “Jackpot” so wife really enjoyed, I don’t drink really but tried a Madri beer so “well chuffed” One of the waitresses dropped a couple of glasses by the bar and boom, gone in sixty seconds, now my plate was just boom and I enquired about who did the “grilling” and as it was 10:00pm he had just left, left him a tenner plus the service charge was £20 and worth every penny! Don’t you hate that “ohh you can take it off with the puppy eyes” so met the owners wife I believe who I think was Argentinian, sorry if I’m wrong but its all about the staff and food and boy was I impressed and Ive been to many a kitchen and shook hands and also conversely said what the flying are you playing at but in this case, £125 for the best cuts, brilliant staff and a great night is worth it here! Its also worth writing a review, which I don’t. I’ll be going to the Falkirk venue, so be aware, you are now in a contest with Bathgate! 9.5 / 10 😎”

“Excellent steak but the service was outstanding, didn't have to wait for anything! Drinks, food, plates all taken away quickly. Service charge is too low at 8%, happy to pay more! Recommend Steak Sampler for Two, great value and steak was cooked very well (even doing the fillet rare with the other cuts medium-rare). Tables are quite close together but it's not too noisy, you can hold a conversation.”

“The food was great, best fillet steak I've had for a while, cooked medium rare, well seasoned and rested 😋 This restaurant beats other steak restaurants 💯. All our sides were lovely and my nachos were tasty also no jalapenos at my request 👍Celebrating an anniversary on arrival waiter brought 2 glasses of prosecco which was a nice touch. All staff were great. The only fault for myself was the bottle of wine was opened before it was brought to our table, the wine was really nice but the bottle should be opened at table and never before. Hopefully on my return I can give 5 stars for service.”
