About Jamaica Inn

Jamaica Inn is a bar & grill in Bangor on Seacliff Rd, set by the sea with views over Belfast Lough. The kitchen cooks seafood, and the clam chowder is served with bread. The gastro-pub menu adds Asian touches, such as Thai chicken curry, and also lists sea bass. The bar pours hot and cold drinks as well as cocktails. A pub quiz runs monthly, and the doors are open daily. Live music is part of the programme too.

Customer Review Summary

Chowder draws the most mention, with one reviewer noting the kids menu serves the same seafood chowder as the adults get, just in a smaller bowl, and another calling the clam chowder very tasty. Close behind are the fish dishes, including seabass, a big bowl of mussels eaten outside and fish and chips, along with burgers and a sirloin steak on the bone cooked medium. Reviewers repeatedly describe large portions, friendly staff and food arriving quickly even when the restaurant was busy. Several single out the sea views from the outdoor seating, and one describes a cosy feel on rainy days. The caveats come from a few diners. One longtime regular reports the beef fillet fettuccine rising sharply in price within months and the wheaten bread served with the chowder being replaced by a slice of crusty bread, and worries about cost cutting. Another found the dishes beyond the chowder just okay and would not recommend the Irish coffee. One diner who disliked seabass asked to swap in pan salmon, and the kitchen agreed straight away.

“Had fun eating here and sitting outside with glorious sea views and a big bowl of mussels. The staff are friendly and we were served really quickly. My friend said that the fish and chips was amazing as well. Will be back!”

“10 out of ten I forgot I forgot to leave a review before the burgers are amazing this time around I went for a fish option. They are very accommodating. I’m not really a fan of Seabass but I loved the whole concept on the sea bus option and I asked them to switch the seabass out for the Pan salmon and immediately he said yes and they were so accommodating it turned out beautiful and I was so full. I was delighted by the food the view by the sea is amazing. It’s lovely to take a walk after and walk off for the calories it was so yummy. The sun was sunning Till next time😍”

“Used to be our regular go to restaurant in Bangor due to consistent quality and price. Went a few months ago and ordered a new dish on the menu, Beef fillet fettuccine £19.00. Very tasty. Was back in recently and the price for the same dish has rocketed to £23.00! (21% increase in a few months) I realise produce sometimes increases in price but has beef really increased 21%? disappointed to see this as its essentially a pasta dish which I won't order again due to the large price increase. Also noticed they no longer serve wheaten bread with the chowder replaced with a slice of crusty bread. Seems to be quite a few changes to the menu lately which appear to be cost cutting reducing quality of items served or price increasing. Really enjoy visiting Jamaica Inn and hope I'm not put off from future visits due to reduced menu choice and quality or further price increases to dishes on the menu. The price increase I mention is just over a recent few weeks/months but as you can see from just one year ago the prices have increased very substantially.”

“Two friends and I had lunch here on 20th April and I meant to write a review. The meal was fresh, well presented, lots of flavour and couldn't have been better. In fact we all said it was the best meal we'd had out in quite a while (one of my friends eats out regularly and in some of the best known places, so that was some compliment!) Two of us had seabass on tiny new potatoes and vegetables, and one had a fancy chicken salad. As the main course was so delicious, we went for desserts. Poached pink pears with fruit which 2 of us shared along with an exotic sounding sponge with ice-cream. We weren't disappointed. Staff were so pleasant, welcoming and attentive (not hanging over us) and we felt so relaxed. I have since recommended the Jamaica Inn to many friends. It's good to share.”

“Brilliant evening at the Jamaica Inn - so glad we chose to eat here. There was so much choice on menu I wasn’t sure if the food would be bland, but it certainly wasn’t. The meals tasted excellent with fresh and generous ingredients! The service was great and the speed of the food coming out was impressive given how busy the restaurant was.”
