Quick info
About The Growler Taphouse & Kitchen
The Growler Taphouse & Kitchen is a British bar and grill on Beresford Terrace in Ayr, built around craft beer served on tap and in bottles. The kitchen runs alongside the bar with a brunch menu, and mussels appear only on Thursdays despite a midweek mussels deal being advertised. Beer is the main draw, and the team puts together a flight of six third-pints for tasting across the taps. Staff guide the choices and answer questions about what is pouring. Dogs are welcome inside. The room is set up for casual visits, with no booking posture stated, and tables fill on a walk-in basis.

Customer Review Summary
The craft beer selection is what draws reviewers in most consistently, with many singling out the rotating taps and the bartender's depth of knowledge on what's pouring. Patrons describe staff as friendly, passionate, and quick to talk through the options, and several call out the brunch menu alongside the drinks as a reason to return. A quieter Sunday afternoon suits the room, according to those who stopped in, and live music and a relaxed vibe come up as part of the appeal. Behind that main pull, though, several visitors describe friction around the kitchen: more than one diner was told a chef had stepped out and left unable to order food, and another found large sections of the menu unavailable because of staffing changes. One reviewer also recounts being asked to rush drinks so the bar could close early on a slow night. A few suggest timing food orders around specific days, since certain advertised specials only run on limited weeknights.

“Good choice of craft beers on tap or bottles. Bartender was knowledgeable about the selection on hand and offered very good service. No mussels until Thursdays (don’t pay heed to the Wed night mussels discount). Food was satisfying and different than typical pub grub.”

“Had some interesting drinks here. The barman was extremely knowledgeable and obviously passionate about his job, absolute gentleman 👏 We didn't try the food but will be sure to on our next visit”

“Its was a quiet Wednesday evening when we popped in on a whim.. the menu looks great but they had a new chef on and lots of items on the menu were not available. The server was very apologetic. We left after our drinks.”

“Went yesterday for food. We were told the chef had nipped out and if he was back before the kitchen closed we could get food. Strange system. He did not return so we after a wait we couldn’t get food. We got a beer flight of 6x1/3 pints (so 2 pints total) for £25 and a can of soft drink £3.50. £28.50 for the equivalent of two pints and a can of juice seems mental. Would not go again.”
