About The Balloch House
On Balloch Rd in Alexandria, The Balloch House is a pub with a fireplace, leather armchairs and paved flooring from the 18th century, so guests can sit by the fire as they eat and drink. The kitchen serves slow-cooked beef shin with mashed potatoes, broccolini and carrots, and it also makes a pulled beef pizza. Sunday brings a trio roast, with beef among the meats. Customer Review Summary
Roast dinners draw the most mentions. One diner calls the pink beef and rich gravy the best roast they have had out, and another enjoyed the Sunday trio roast. A third found the triple roast meat delicious but missed roast potatoes, got frozen Yorkshire puddings, and thought it expensive for what arrived. Close behind are the slow-cooked beef shin, described as fall off the bone tender, the signature burger with gherkins and crispy fries, and the pie of the day, including a ham and leek version. The chicken schnitzel, halloumi fries and skewers also earn praise. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, but slow service at busy times is the main complaint. Reviewers describe a long wait to order and again for the food, and one diner had to walk to the kiosk to pay before a train. One reviewer found the inside cold and dark with no fire on. A vegan lentil cottage pie was enjoyed by a diner who sat at the bar tables without a booking.

“Outside seating was lovely however inside was very cold and dark with no fire on. We ordered the triple roast, the meat was delicious however disappointed to not get any roast potatoes and when paying £24 for a roast dinner I would expect homemade Yorkshire puddings not frozen ones. Overall the restaurant is in a good location and the food was tasty enough, albeit a bit expensive for what you got.”

“VEGAN - Lentil Cottage Pie was delicious. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and quick service. I had dinner, without a booking and sat at the bar tables. Highly recommend.”

“The food here is great, especially the slow-cooked beef shin, which was delicious and perfectly tender. The staff members were also very friendly and polite. However, the service speed was incredibly slow. We waited 20 minutes just to place our order, and another 30 minutes for the food to arrive. In the end, because I had a train to catch, I couldn't afford to wait for a server and had to walk up to the kiosk myself just to settle the bill. It seems extremely understaffed during peak weekend hours.”

“I had the slow-cooked beef shin and it was absolutely delicious. Fall off the bone tender and flavorful with a healthy serving of mashed potatoes, broccolini, and carrots. While half the restaurant was reserved for a wedding, service was lovely. Bathrooms are also clean and plentiful. Would recommend.”
