Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the setting, with the estuary views and beer garden praised even by some who left disappointed. Food is where opinions divide. Sunday lunch earns the warmest comments, especially the triple roast with pigs in blankets and a correctly sized Yorkshire pudding, while the Hunters Chicken Schnitzel and the steak and Malbec pie, with plenty of steak and excellent gravy, were also enjoyed. Others call the food basic, average or mediocre, though gluten free care is praised. Drinks are repeatedly called expensive, and one visit found the bar out of bitter. Service splits too. Several describe a friendly, welcoming server and helpful staff, but one guest was ignored by a barman and told the restaurant would close early because of a road closure, and another found the promised step free room unavailable at check in. One reviewer finds the pub understaffed. One diner's 8oz sirloin arrived thin and fatty, and a request to swap the peas brought a single mushroom, then green beans.

“Just had a great Sunday lunch. The triple roast with side of pigs in blankets was great and obvious choice when you can't pick which meat to go for! .Really enjoyed it. Tasty and well cooked. Great selection of veg and correct size Yorkshire pudding, not a tiny one but not the size of the plate. We were served by Jake who was very welcoming, friendly and made our meal really relaxed and comfortable. Definitely recommended for a nice Sunday lunch with perfect setting. Diolch. Thanks.”

“I've always liked the bar area and been back every time I'm in Aberdyfi. Got great memories of the place. Ate there recently and the food is very basic, very average. If there was a star rating for food, it would be a one. Staff are very nice though. Can't stay because its dog friendly and im allergic. One time I did I could hardly breathe.”

“A beautiful location on the edge of the estuary. Staff are generally scruffy, and you never get a second chance to make a first impression! When we arrived at reception, there was no eye contact or welcome to the Penhelig, just a grunted ' be with you in a minute'. We had been given confirmation of a room in the unit at the back of the pub where there are no stairs and allocated parking, however on check-in this was not available. So we were in a room in the pub up a horrible set of stairs (the firedoor at the top of the stairs is incredibly dirty) with paint peeling off the ceiling. Thanks to Jake for the help with our luggage. Barry who was running the bar single handed was like Superman providing drinks to the restaurant, the inside bar and the outdoor terrace - amazing effort. Drinks were pricey - a large Malbec at £13.50 - really! Food was good - the chef has a rest from 3pm to 4pm. The pub is generally understaffed and this is noticeable in all areas. The ladies loos at the end of the bar are in a disgraceful decorative state.”

“Staff were polite and helpful but couldn’t tell who was staff and who were customers, just a polo shirt would make a difference. Food was good and the food rating of 3 is on par with the food served to us. You have half the things right and a lot more could be so much better. The table had a sticky residue from wiping down from last people, Dining room could do with a bit of a nice smell circulating. Could do with toilets this side instead of having to walk through the bar. But the penhelig arms is a lovely building.”
