Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the friendly, welcoming staff, from bartenders described as helpful to a team that took in a group of ten without a booking on a busy Friday evening and got the food out quickly. Praise for the food centres on generous main meals, large desserts and "superb pub grub", and one reviewer notes 15 or so beers on tap. Close behind come spacious rooms with views of the harbour. The kitchen draws sharper complaints too. One diner found the steak and ale pie's pastry lid hard and the gravy thin, another got dried out sausage and mash with watery gravy, and a Sunday roast beef was called tasteless. One table's QR code orders went nowhere because the printer was not working, so drinks never arrived. A guest in a room above the bar describes loud live music through the night, and staff admitting the room should not have been given, offering a free breakfast. Another guest found the paid breakfast simply missing and was offered a refund.

“Dinner was nice, room was nice. Breakfast was non-existent. A fundamental part of the trip and already paid for, but I had to go to work on an empty stomach. They offered a refund to be fair, but I still had to find somewhere else to eat - and I’m going to have to explain it to the boss.”

“What can I say about this place? Unfortunately, there isn’t much positive to mention. The location was supposed to be one of the main advantages, but even that came with its own issues. First of all, when booking through Booking.com, the property states that parking is available. This is misleading, as there is no parking at the property. Instead, you have to pay around £16 to use the town car park, which is about a 5-minute walk away - and that’s assuming you’re only staying for one night. Dinner was okay. I had the classic steak and ale pie, but the pastry lid was incredibly hard and almost impossible to eat. It had essentially been placed on top of the pie rather than being properly part of it, so it didn’t hold together and wasn’t particularly enjoyable. To make matters worse, the gravy was basically water - incredibly thin and lacking any flavour. However, the worst part of our stay was the lack of sleep. I got around three hours of sleep in total. Whatever you do, do not stay here on a Saturday, during a bank holiday weekend, or on any night when the bar next door has live music. Our room was literally above the bar, and the music was extremely loud. It continued until around 1am, accompanied by drunk people shouting, laughing, drinking and breaking glasses. Just when I finally managed to fall asleep, I was woken up at around 2:30am by more loud music and people - this time coming from somewhere else. The noise continued until approximately 5am. When I spoke to the staff in the morning, they actually admitted that we shouldn’t have been given that room because of the noise. Unfortunately, that was rather too late to be useful after a completely sleepless night. They did offer us a free breakfast, which was okay, and I appreciate the gesture. However, given the circumstances, I would have expected at least a partial refund. A free breakfast hardly makes up for paying for a room where you’re unable to sleep. This was, without a doubt, the worst accommodation experience I have ever had. Between the misleading information about parking and, most importantly, the unbearable noise throughout the night, I would absolutely not stay here again and cannot recommend it.”

“The service and food were both terrible. We ordered via QR code, as there was big signs advertising it. After waiting 20 mins for drinks we went to the bar to be told the printer didn't work so they couldn't take drink orders from QR codes. We waited another 15 minutes for food, 35 mins in total, then were told there was a 45 minute wait. The barmaid came over shortly after to say it was actually a 50 min wait and checked what we'd ordered ,as she said we had accidently taken items off, we checked the order online and we hadn't. The food eventually arrived 55 mins after we ordered and was awful. I had sausage and mash, the sausages were totally dried out and chewy, like they had been cooked and kept warm for hours and the gravy was like water.Never again, horrible place!”
