“Fantastic stay! A quick 8 minute walk to the Shambles and Jorvick Center, gorgeous spacious room, very comfortable bed and the room had all required amenities and more. Super clean and lovely touches. To top it off, the food has been outstanding. 10/10 stay and would highly reccomend, we will be back! Thank you to all of the friendly staff.”

“Whilst a short journey from the center, this pub meets all the requirements of being an authentic old English pub. Ladies and gentlemen, should you ever desire a pie for tea then look no further than the Rose and Crown. The prices are not too crazy and the portions at first feel short handed, I guarantee you that it is simply your eyes being too big for your belly. Come on down and enjoy the experience this authentic rustic pub has to offer”

“Wow! The chicken burger is amazing. Best burger I’ve had in our two weeks around Scotland and England. I added bacon and it was delicious. My wife had the shepherds pie and it was delicious as well. Friendly staff. Great atmosphere. Well done.”

Customer Review Summary
Pies are what reviewers most often come for, with a large selection served with gravy, mushy peas and chips. One diner calls them clearly homemade and tasty, and singles out the chunky chips, crispy outside and fluffy inside, as the highlight. Close behind, a chicken burger with added bacon is called the best of one visitor's trip around Scotland and England, a shepherd's pie gets praise, and nachos are called fantastic. Staff are described as friendly, helpful and welcoming, with a quick check-in, and several reviewers who stayed overnight mention a comfortable bed, a spotless room and a short walk into York. Free parking at the back also comes up. Reviewers describe the pub as authentic, rustic, warm and cozy. The caveats are specific. One pie lunch was not a standout for the price and the mushy peas were over-seasoned. A guest who stayed overnight found the room very small, facing an extremely busy road, with a dark bathroom and a stale musky smell. Several visitors say they plan to return.
