About Gatehouse Coffee
Gatehouse Coffee is a coffee shop inside Walmgate Bar on York's city walls, and it forms part of Calvary Chapel York. The stone building is several hundred years old and spreads over three floors linked by a stone staircase. Visitors can step in from pavement level or come straight off the city walls. The food and coffee counter is on the first floor, with some seating beside it. Upstairs, a room holds settees, couches, tables and board games. The top level opens onto a roof terrace with views across the city. The drinks list covers espresso, lattes, cappuccino and a dirty chai, plus loose leaf tea served in pots. Scones come with cream and jam, and the counter also carries brownies, cakes and pastries.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the setting, a coffee stop inside Walmgate Bar that walkers of the York city walls use as a mid-walk or end-of-walk break. Inside, the stone building spreads over several floors, with a room of settees and board games upstairs and a roof terrace that reviewers describe as having great views. The drinks come close behind: lattes, a cappuccino, a dirty chai and an espresso are praised, and one reviewer calls the chai tea perfect. Another says the loose leaf tea in pots was the best they had ever had. Among food, the warm scones with cream and jam and a moist chocolate brownie are named, and the cakes looked great to one visitor. Staff are called friendly and warm. The caveats are small. One reviewer found food options limited, another waited a while for an espresso at a busy moment, and one notes there is only a single toilet. One reviewer still stayed for the view across the city, even with a dual carriageway and a supermarket in sight.

“Today we’re out walking the city walls in York. Just wandering and looking at all the history and sites to see, and we came across this great little coffee shop located directly in the Walmgate Bar. There are other coffee shops along the wall, but this one is outstanding. From the location to the extent of original structure, this is by far the best experience for coffee along the York Wall. Jamie and Dania took such great care and made us superb lattes. The chocolate brownie we had was also moist and full of flavor. As you walk the wall, save that cool sit down spot for this little gem.”

“A great place to have a cup of tea or coffee. The Chai tea was perfect! Great views on the second floor, or even the rooftop. The person working behind the counter shed we were there is the best! 👌”

“I headed into York with the idea of walking the walls. I walked over to Walmgate Bar and then headed anticlockwise around the city. I noted that there was a cafe, Gatehouse Coffee, within Walmgate Bar, not sure how long that had been there, I don’t recall one been there when I was living in York in the 1980s. It was early, so was closed. I then walked the city walls, which took just over an hour. Upon my arrival back at Walmgate Bar the Gatehouse Coffee was open, I thought about it, decided I would stop for a coffee. It was quite busy, I placed my order for an espresso and waited. It took a while for my coffee, as there were quite a few orders been dealt with prior to mine. I took a seat and enjoyed my coffee, there is outdoor seating in the gate and upstairs as well. As I drank my coffee, I could see that the “delay” was just because I happened to arrive at a busy time, other customers got their drinks in good time. The coffee was excellent and I would have probably stayed for another if my car parking wasn’t about to run out. If you are walking the walls of York then (depending on where you start) this is an ideal place for an end of walk drink, or a mid-walk stop. Service was warm and friendly. I hope to make a return visit soon.”

“This was the perfect coffee stop while walking the city wall of York! Such a unique location, inside the tower. There is plenty of comfortable seating indoors (with games), as well as a couple of interesting seating areas outside on the wall with great views. The espresso drinks were fantastic (we ordered a cappuccino and a dirty chai) and the scones (with cream and jam) were served warm and were perfectly soft and rich.”

“Climbed up for afternoon tea and it was well worth it. It advertises itself as a coffee shop but the tea was superb. Loose leaf first pick tips in very serviceable pots. The best I've ever had. And the location is great although the aerial views of Waitrose and dual carriageways could be better😀”
