About The Vagabond
The Vagabond is a bar in Whitehaven, set in a small upstairs room at 9 Marlborough St by the Marina docks. Cask ales come on handpump, including Bowness Swan Blonde and Cumbrian Ales Grasmoor Dark Ale, so the bar suits anyone who wants a local pint. Food runs alongside the drinks, with a Sunday roast dinner served with Yorkshires and cauliflower cheese. The bar opens every day except Wednesday, when it is closed.

Customer Review Summary
Pizza is what most reviewers come back to The Vagabond for, with the goats cheese and tex-mex pizzas singled out, plus freshly made bases that are generously topped with fresh vegetables and plenty of cheese. Close behind are the scallops starter, which one reviewer calls fabulous and another calls fab, and the chicken pie and Sunday roast with Yorkshires and cauliflower cheese. Cheesecake and lasagne also earn praise. Reviewers repeatedly describe polite, good service, including a table found without a booking on a busy bank holiday and another reserved at short notice, though a few suggest booking since the venue is small. One reviewer also praises a well-kept Swan Blonde on the handpumps and notes the spot by the marina and docks. The one sour note comes from a vegetarian, who found the vegetable tajine with rice and chips dull, with about ten chickpeas and a few slices of carrot in a flat sauce, and the chips dry. That reviewer's meat-eating friends were happy with their meals. Several others mention a busy room, including a Monday birthday party where the staff were called superb.

“The Vagabond is excellent. Service is attentive, food very high quality. I'd be surprised if there is anywhere in Whitehaven to match it. Pics= scallops starter-fab. Chicken pie main course- also v good Update Aug 2026 The Vagabond continues to be excellent; we had the roast dinner, available on Sundays. Great roast, Yorkshires, cauliflower cheese, well cooked veg. If you're in Whitehaven, try and go”

“Very nice place. We went as a group of three and we sat upstairs. All of us had pizzas and they were very nice. I recommend the tex-mex pizza! Prices were reasonable, and there is an extensive menu with nice European dishes. Will come again to try some more stuff out, and would recommend anyone to come here for a nice dinner. Would recommend reserving a table.”

“We've been there yesterday as in a randomly chosen place with pizza in Whitehaven. We were very happy with our choice! Staff was very polite, place really nice inside and pizzas were delicious - apart from classics, The Vagabond has really cool, original flavours to choose from. We will be surely coming back if in the area.”

“Fantastic service. Gave us a table without a booking on a busy bank holiday. Pizza was freshly made and generously topped with really fresh vegetables and loads of cheese. Will return.”

“As a vegetarian I am accustomed to eating establishments not really giving a damn about my dietary preferences. Same here unfortunately. From the limited vegetarian options I took a chance on their vegetable tajine with rice and chips. It couldn't have been any more uninspiring if they had tried. I counted about 10 chick peas with a few bits of sliced carrot in a monotone dull tasting sauce. I was disappointed but not surprised. Also the chips were quite dry and not fresh tasting. Very poor indeed and a waste of money. In fairness my friends were happy with their meat based offerings. Not recommended for vegetarians no way...”
