About Crocodile
Crocodile is a tapas bar in Whitby, at 33 Flowergate, with just five tables. Crocodiles hang from the ceiling, and unusual touches carry through the room, right down to the bathroom. The kitchen is open, so guests can watch the chefs work in front of them. The tapas menu includes Padron peppers and chorizo in wine, and a cheese sharing board with charcuterie suits a table that wants to share. With so few tables, the room stays small and the cooking stays in plain view. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the "famous five" tapas sharing plate, ordered repeatedly alongside padron peppers and chorizo in wine, and described as full of flavour and some of the best tapas they have had. Close behind are the cheese sharing board, a charcuterie plate one diner calls the best they have had, and desserts such as a pavlova, lemon polenta cake and orange almond cake. The room is tiny, with a kitchen in view, and its quirky decor, from crocodiles hanging overhead to the bathroom, draws steady comment. Hosts are called welcoming and funny, and several mention being greeted with a hug at the door, which one reviewer notes some people might not want. The one recurring caution is demand: several say the place is normally fully booked, that people were turned away without a reservation, and that they booked well ahead. One reviewer mentions hearing the service can be slow, yet found it perfect with every chair occupied. Another notes the loo is up some steps.

“To know up front: mine host WILL hug you. He hugs everyone. On arrival and sometimes as you leave too. He's pretty "hands on." I didn't mind it but I know some folk for whom this would be a deal breaker. * We visited on a weeknight in October. We booked and we were SO GLAD we had. This place is really great and really popular, definitely book!! We had the cheese sharing board which was absolutely amazing and was LOADS of food, we'd also ordered 2 extra tapas in case it wasn't enough but we probably didn't need the extras! They were GREAT too though, all the food was amazing. Cooked to perfection, really flavourful, probably the best tapas we've ever had. Wine really good too. The place is really quirky and full of interesting things to look at. Some other reviews here say the service can be slow but this wasn't our experience at all, every chair was occupied but service was perfect. The loo is up some steps so if you need level access be aware of that! Highly recommend a visit. We hope to return!!”

“An absolutely fantastic dining experience! What a little gem of a restaurant! We had the most wonderful evening at Crocodile, and I honestly cannot recommend it highly enough. The food was absolutely exceptional - every dish was beautifully prepared, full of flavour and clearly made with real passion and attention to detail. Some of the best tapas we’ve had! The restaurant itself is tiny, with just five tables, which makes for such a lovely, intimate dining experience. One of my favourite things is that the kitchen is practically part of the restaurant! You can watch the chefs working their magic right in front of you, which adds something really special to the whole experience. The décor is wonderfully quirky and full of character - from the crocodiles hanging from the ceiling to all the other unusual little touches, there’s so much to look at! The service was fantastic from start to finish. Even the communication when booking was brilliant, with friendly and efficient text messages making everything so easy. It’s rare to find somewhere that gets absolutely everything right, but Crocodile really does. Incredible food, a brilliant atmosphere, lovely service and a truly unique setting. An absolute must-visit when in Whitby. We loved every minute and will definitely be back!”

“For the first time ever we were greeted at the door of a restaurant with a hug from the proprietor. Such a warm welcome and I'm happy to report that the food was excellent too.”

“Fabulous from the start. We booked in April for August, only because it’s the summer holidays and after reading the reviews it was better to book. We had the Famous 5 and wow, ate the lot. Plus the Lemon polenta cake and Orange almond cake. Welcoming, great service and fabulous food. Love the quirky decor too. Thanks for a great pre birthday meal without kids!”

“Best tapas restaurant! We were so excited to find this quirky, intimate and gorgeous little restaurant! The service was exceptional, we were made to feel so welcome. The atmosphere was perfect, upbeat and lively, exactly what we wanted on a Sunday evening! Oh and the food is another level! Highly recommended. They have everything spot on at Crocodile, don't change a thing!!”
