About Crows Nest Beefeater

Crows Nest Beefeater is a steak house on Tring Hill in Tring, attached to the neighbouring inn and serving both an evening meal and breakfast. The grill menu centres on steak, with a chicken and ribs combo for those who want more than one cut on the plate. Wings come as a starter, so a meal can open with something to share before the mains arrive. Breakfast offers a continental option or a fry, with unlimited tea and coffee alongside. The setting suits guests staying next door as well as anyone dining in from the town. The restaurant belongs to the Beefeater group, which opened its first site in 1974 and now runs more than 140 restaurants across the UK.

Customer Review Summary

Ribs are the most frequent draw, praised as very good on their own and in the chicken and ribs combo, which one diner says did not disappoint. Reviewers also single out the wings, a mixed grill, a steak cooked medium rare and a chocolate orange bread and butter pudding. Breakfast gets credit as plentiful and excellent value, with a continental and a fry on offer. Staff are repeatedly called lovely and fantastic, and the garden views and relaxed feel earn a mention. The main complaints concern slow, stretched service and shortages. One diner found most of the menu unavailable on a Sunday evening, and another found the nachos without salsa. Others say portions are shrinking, with the corn ribs reduced to three mini segments and the chicken a single thin slice. Some call the restaurant tired and tatty. One late-running evening ended with a steak sent back, forgotten chips and a cold apple pie and custard.

“Service was very slow, wasnt even busy. Had to ask 2 members of staff for the other part of my meal as the first forgot. The meals weren't very nice, coleslaw was off, waited over 10 minutes for drinks. Was over charged, use to be really nice in there. Wasnt the best birthday meal, staff were nice but didn't seem like they were bothered.”

“We were staying in the adjacent Premier Inn so had both our evening meal and breakfast in The Crows Nest. Food was great for pub grub. The service was faultless and the staff were fantastic. The restaurant is looking very tired and tatty but given the fact that it's probably closing soon and is for sale, I'm not surprised. It will be a shame to see it go if that's the case as it's been a local favourite for decades.”

“I was passing through Tring on my journey from Aylesbury to Ipswich and needed to find some dinner. What a spectacular find 🎉 The wings for the starter were fabulous, the mixed grill was cooked to perfection, the steak was perfectly medium rare unlike a lot of places where they are either boot leather over cooked or still mooing at you 🤣🤣🤣 The highlight of my meal was the chocolate orange bread and butter pudding, outstanding 🥳🥳🥳 The hostesses were attentive and very polite, the views from the garden were fantastic 🙌🤝🙏”

“Excellent value for money. Where else can you get a continental AND a fry with unlimited tea and coffee for £12?! Local people will miss this when it’s gone.”

“I came here for lunch with my family and did not have a good experience. When we walked in, the person stood at the podium did not acknowledge us and we had to ask him if we could find a table to which he seemed irritated. We sat down and I had a gluten free menu as I am coeliac. Cutlery was brought over and I was assured this had been sterilised. I had my meal which was pretty dry but okay. 30 mins later when I got home I became unwell with the symptoms of gluten exposure. I have been a coeliac for 20 years and this was the worst reaction I've had in a very long time. I don't believe this was a case of cross contamination, I think I was given a standard meal instead of a gluten free one. I've spent the last 4 weeks unable to eat the majority of foods because the damage to my gut sustained whilst eating this meal has been so severe. Save your money and definitely don't eat here if you have allergies/coeliac disease.”
