About Thomas Tosh

Thomas Tosh is a cafe in Thornhill at 19 E Morton St, set in a converted church that was formerly the Church Halls. The building has a high ceiling and a mezzanine floor, and the cafe shares the space with a gift shop and a small art gallery. Coffee is served alongside a lunch menu that includes a tapas plate and miso mushrooms, and the cake selection runs to Victoria sponge and walnut coffee cake. The shop side stocks gifts, books, cards, candles, jewellery and local produce. Dogs are welcome inside. Shop orders can be placed for click and collect, and a virtual tour of the shop is available by appointment through the website.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the miso mushrooms, which one diner says they lack words to praise enough and another calls a speciality. Close behind are the tapas plate, the BLT with its beetroot and butter bean side salad, and the cakes, including walnut coffee cake and Victoria sponge, alongside good coffee. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and helpful, and the setting is a converted church hall with a high ceiling, an airy feel, and a gallery and gift shop selling books, jewellery, cards and candles. The main caveats are cost and comfort. A few say the shop tempts them into spending more than planned, one found that not every product carries a price and paid for a jar of presto without knowing the cost, and one found the room a little cold. One asparagus and lemon tart came out slightly burnt and extremely hot with no warning. One diner had an affogato made off menu.

“A good menu and quick service. Excellent cakes and good coffee. Good atmosphere and a wide range of books and other items for sale.”

“A 2nd visit, bought a book and had a look around the giftshop. Then coffee and a bit of cake. I will keep returning every time I pass through the village. A lovely place, friendly helpful staff, very clean, we stopped for coffee, can of Coke, had Victoria sponge, pancakes, bacon, maple syrup for £16.40p Lots to buy in the gift shop, books, jewellery, cards, candles, scents, and lots more. All in a historic building that used to be the Church Halls.”

“Wow…what can I say?!…I don’t have the words to praise the miso mushrooms enough!…they were out of this world!…the veg soup was pretty good too and the setting is lovely too with a nice open and airy feel, there is also a small art gallery and shop selling local produce, can’t wait to come back here for the miso mushrooms 😍”
  • Brian Lowry
“Good for coffee or for a lunch, good range on the menu, the miso mushrooms are a speciality I think. It’s a shop as well. A little bit on the cold side in the room when you are sitting for a while, it’s a converted church I think”
  • Karen Miller
“A really nice wee place with a good lunch menu and plenty of seating in the same space as a gallery/shop. The waiter made me affogato off menu, which always scores brownie points. The asparagus and lemon tart was nice but a bit burnt and approximately the temperature of the sun, which it would have been good to get a warning about 😂 Side salad was imaginative, not just baby leaves. Be prepared to spend more than you expected because the shop side is full of lovely, tempting things.”
