About Raja of Kent

On Biddenden Rd in Tenterden, Raja of Kent is an Indian restaurant with a curry house menu that puts venison and tikka fish next to the classic curries. That gives diners game and fish options alongside the usual choices, which include balti, madras, bhuna and jalfrezi dishes and biryani. The bread selection includes a keema naan, and the sides run to aloo gobi, mushroom rice and pilau rice. Chicken shashlik and lamb shank appear among the mains for those who want something beyond the standard curry list. The kitchen also offers a set menu. Dessert is a short close to the meal, with a floater coffee on the list.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the curries themselves, with the jalfrezi, xacuti chicken, keema, balti, madras and bhuna named as delicious and well cooked. Close behind are the lamb shank with pilau rice, the chicken shashlik, the tikka fish and a biryani one diner calls the best they have tasted, along with aloo gobi, mushroom rice and a keema naan. Staff come up repeatedly as friendly and attentive without hovering, and one server got a diabetic diner's coffee made with minimal sugar exactly as asked. Regulars mention years of good meals and a free homemade mango dessert at the end. The complaints are serious but few. A vegan diner with a dairy allergy was repeatedly assured the spinach rolls were vegan, then told after eating them that they contained cheese, and the manager apologised and removed the food. Another reviewer found a collection order on the small side and said the restaurant offered a refund on only one meal when they asked for more.

“The food and service were delicious. The staff were incredibly energetic and friendly. In particular, Rashad was a highlight. For dessert, my mum ordered an alcoholic floater coffee and she wanted minimal sugar as she is diabetic. She asked for one teaspoon at most. Rashad brought a coffee with perfectly floating cream and he had only used half a teaspoon! Magnificent!”

“This place is outstanding… warm , friendly staff ,welcomed and treat well by Rashed especially. And what can I say about the food… Keemas, baltis, madras , the bhunas and even all the added sides were cooked expertly , all at a reasonable price. Tempted? You’d be a fool not to try!”

“We’ve been coming here for years and have never had a bad experience. The food has always been delicious and the service excellent. Tonight was no exception and at the end of our meal we were served a delicious homemade mango dessert on the house which was a lovely surprise and very much appreciated. We really can’t recommend The Raja highly enough.”

“We had dinner here as we were stay the weekend in the Kings hotel. We were very pleased with the service and friendly nature of all the waiters. The food was great. I chose the lamb shank which was spiced nicely and came with pilau rice and a curried vegetable side. The wife chose the chicken shashlik which was also very tender. Our bread choice was a keema naan which made it back to our room for a late night snack. I would recommend the Raja of Kent and would definitely go again if we were in the area.”
