Customer Review Summary

Diners most often return to the smokehouse platter, with reviewers describing every meat as tender and perfectly cooked, including the ribs and a big sausage, and no dry piece among them. Brisket samples for first-timers and free popcorn also draw praise. Close behind are the peach iced tea, mentioned repeatedly, and mains like the bird and beast burger and the mac n cheese. One reviewer singles out the onion blossom, another the Frickles and corn dogs. Complaints center on service pace, pushiness and value. One diner waited a long time for another drink and a water refill, and another says staff were slow to clear empty glasses. One couple felt a waitress kept pushing the largest platter after they twice asked for a genuine recommendation. Others report greasy coleslaw, salty Frickles, dry pulled pork on the Hog Heaven, food that seemed pricey for average, and a muggy room without air conditioning. Several celebrating occasions describe staff bringing out a Happy Anniversary board with a donut, or a complimentary cookie with ice cream.

“We came here for a birthday treat, and travelled a substantial distance for it! And it was worth every mile. Our first ever visit to a Hickory’s. The service from the very start was exceptional, all the staff were really friendly and personable. The food is next level. It’s rare to find somewhere that can pull off quantity and quality at the same time. The smokehouse platter for 2, which probably could have fed 3, was sublime. Meats and sides packed full of flavour. The drinks were also delicious, the grape soda being the standout choice. A very large range to choose from and it was nice to have alternatives to usual Coca Cola, Fanta etc. They also noted it was my partners birthday, and the birthday board at the end was the icing on the cake. There is an optional ‘tip jar’ added to your bill, and the staff really do earn it. So much so we tripled ours! We will definitely return for a special occasion, even though it is a 120 mile round trip for us. Please open a restaurant in Bournemouth or Poole!”

“My husband and I went to Hickory's in Swindon for our 12th Anniversary. As an American who loves Bar-B- Q, I've been trying to find a taste of home away from home. I think we found it in Swindon! There are lots of menu choices and we decided on Frickles and Corn Dogs for starters. The corn dogs were flavourful and lovely. We really enjoyed the Frickles and the sauce that comes with them. Our only complaint with the Frickles is they were quite salty. Next time we will ask them to forego sprinkling them with salt. For dinner, we ordered the pallet for 2. The smoked meats were top notch, tender, juicy and perfectly smoked. Their pit boss knows what he's doing! We enjoyed the salads and the baked beans. My husband had the Hickory's pale ale and I had a peach tea, delicious! The staff were attentive and friendly. They placed a cute sign on our table that said "Happy Anniversary" and at the end of our meal brought out a slab of wood with Happy Anniversary dusted on it and a donut to share. We enjoyed our meal and over all experience at Hickory's in Swindon. It was a much better experience than the Hickory's location in Gloucester. Highly recommend!”

“The service was amazing. Staff were attentive and quick and the food came out super fast. I got one of the mac n cheeses and honestly I can most definitely say it was the best food i’ve ever had out to eat. The portion sizes were really good as well for the price. I am extremely impressed and can’t believe I haven’t discovered this place sooner. The entire atmosphere was very clean, including the tablets, floors and toilets!”

“Firstly there is no aircon here and on a hot day it is extremely muggy and uncomfortable. Huge admiration for the staff who all remain friendly and welcoming when working in these conditions. Our server Emily was excellent. Recommended the onion blossom which was a revelation. All the food was so tasty with great dips and a cheese fondue. As we visited on a Friday we got a good deal on wine and peach tea. We will definitely be back but on a cooler day!”

“We visited Hickory's Smokehouse for a date night on our holiday. They found us a table overlooking the chef barbecuing the meat which was really interesting to watch. We were given popcorn to snack on whilst we ordered which was fun. We ordered two burgers. The 'bird and beast' and the 'go big or go home'. Both were really nice. The beef stood out as being flame grilled and had a delicious flavourm The chips were super crispy! There was also a few different interesting sauce choices on the table. My only negative on the food was the coleslaw. Mine was absolutely disgustingly greasy. Like it had cold congealed fat poured over the whole thing. I actually had to leave it, it was so bad. Totally in contrast to everything else which was delicious. We loved seeing the chef barbecue the meat. What a fantastic kitchen layout. How he wasn't melting I don't know! The ladies toilets were upstairs and were great. Lots of cubicles and nice and clean. Ample amount of free parking available which was helpful. Staff were friendly but when we asked for recommendations for the food as it was out first time dining, we were told to order the largest platter on the menu. When we asked again what was the chefs speciality as we didn't want to order the most expensive thing on the menu, the waitress doubled down and pushed the largest platter... We were slightly exasperated. We didn't want to be upsold so she would have a larger tip, we wanted a genuine recommendation and instead felt like we were just being seen as cash cows. She seemed let down that we hadn't ordered it as well which made us feel guilty. We ordered what we wanted and it was great, but the waitress was definitely too pushy. The 'life's a peach' - peach iced tea was great. We ended up ordering extra of those!”
