About Joe's Ice Cream Parlour

Joe's Ice Cream Parlour is an ice cream shop at 85 St Helen's Rd in Swansea, and the flagship of the family's three Swansea parlours. Its vanilla ice cream follows a recipe Joe created in 1922, and four generations of the family have kept making it that way. The menu pairs that vanilla with a knickerbocker glory, milkshakes that include a large one to share, and a plate of waffles with vanilla ice cream and hazelnut topping. This branch serves vanilla and no other flavours by the scoop. Orders go in at the counter, and customers carry them to a table. Joe's also runs parlours in Cardiff and Llanelli.

Customer Review Summary

Vanilla ice cream is the draw most reviewers return to, called lovely, super-creamy and melt-in-the-mouth, and one reviewer says they have it every day when back in Swansea. Close behind are a Knickerbockerglory, a large milkshake share, and a plate of waffles with vanilla ice cream and hazelnut topping, which one diner calls yummy. The parlour is described as clean, with lovely, friendly staff. The complaints recur around seating and range. Seating is scarce on busy evenings, and one reviewer describes waiting for a table, then rejoining a long queue in the cold, with flustered teenage staff. Others note this branch serves no fresh flavours aside from vanilla and no chocolate by the scoop. One calls that bonkers after being told it is because this is the original parlour. A dog walker carrying a puppy was turned away under the no-dogs policy, and one gelato fan found the vanilla hype a meh experience. One reviewer also describes a server who, on hearing a request for no wafer, changed gloves, used new utensils and fetched fresh toppings from the fridge.

“I am definitely a connesseur of Italian gelato and honestly I didn't get the big hype about the vanilla ice cream. I know Joe's is an institution in Swansea but for me and my family the experience was a meh! Taste is subjective though.”

“Best ice cream in the world ! Beautiful and clean parlour with lovely friendly staff. Parking can be a bit tricky . Not wheelchair accessible due to a big step at the front door”

“Vanilla ice cream lovely, but the most bonkers thing ever is them not serving chocolate ice cream by the scoop. Unlike all the other Joes ice cream parlours which do, the lady serving said it is because it’s the original parlour. Why refuse to sell something and lose money because it’s the original parlour? They were nice in there though.”

“I've always enjoyed Joe's Ice Cream, and I completely understand that businesses have policies they need to follow. However, after a beach walk with my puppy, I stopped by the St Helens Road branch intending only to buy a takeaway ice cream. As my puppy was being carried in my arms, I hadn't anticipated that the no-dogs policy would apply in that situation too. It did make me wonder whether a takeaway window or hatch could be considered in the future. With so many dog walkers in the area, especially those coming from the beach, it would be a great option for customers who simply want to grab an ice cream without entering the premises. For now, Joe's unfortunately isn't an option for us on our walks, so we'll be using alternative ice cream vendors instead. That said, I appreciate that policies are in place for a reason, and I hope this is taken as a constructive suggestion rather than a criticism.”

“Outstanding approach to allergens and intolerances, they couldn't have been more careful. As soon as I asked for no wafer, the gentleman serving me asked if it was a gluten allergy or a preference. Without asking, he proceeded to change his gloves, use new utensils, and get fresh toppings from the fridge rather than using the ones on the counter. Aside from tasting fantastic, the care and attention was very reassuring.”

Highlights

“Joe Created a unique vanilla ice cream recipe back in 1922. Four generations later, his family of ice cream purists still use that same recipe to craft and serve the distinctly moreish Joe’s Ice Cream that you enjoy today! In 2022, we celebrated 100 years of ice cream making in Wales. We have refreshed our brand to reflect our original and more classic blue. Our three Swansea parlours already showcase our new branding and our Cardiff and Llanelli parlours will reflect our new blue towards the end of 2023. The original since 1922. Our St. Helen’s parlour is our flagship location. Owned and managed by Joe, this is where he introduced his now-famous ice cream to the people of Swansea.”
