About 1950s American Diner
1950s American Diner is a diner on John St in Swadlincote, run from an original 1950s American dining cart. The drinks list includes boozy milkshake floats made with cola or spiced cream soda, and dessert comes as a salted caramel churro sundae. Burgers cover the main menu, including the Mac stack burger, and vegan options are available. Booth seating and music that matches the 1950s theme fill the space, and the cooking area is open.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the 1950s theming, praising the nostalgic decor, the on-theme music and a friendly welcome, with a history printed on the back of the drinks menu and a wall of shame that gets a laugh. Floats and milkshakes come close behind, including a vanilla cola float, a spiced cream soda boozy float and a biscoff milkshake. Diners also name the Mac stack burger, crispy potato tots, pulled pork and a salted caramel sundae with churros. One vegan diner found plenty of options. A couple of reviewers suggest booking for booth seating. The food draws more mixed comment. Some call it just okay and suspect much of it is not made on site. One found the wings in a sloppy sauce, the Boston beans overly sweet and the chicken and waffles stringy. Others report no peanut butter or banana, and deep fried ice cream missing its listed chocolate sauce and cherry. Servers are described as stressed, and one table received wrong drinks twice, found an empty mayonnaise bottle and had to chase a coffee refill, with the rest of the drinks arriving after the food was set down.

“I think this place is good, the staff are lovely Amy especially was very kind and chatty. Milkshakes look great. This place is good for an excessive treat kind day out. I had the waffles and fried chicken which was great! My wife the chilli dog which was tastey.”

“A great little American-style diner near Derby. The 1950s theme gives the place a really nice atmosphere, and the food was tasty and well presented. The staff were friendly and the whole experience was enjoyable. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for something a bit different.”

“The building is nice, the staff are polite and the sundaes are good. The food however needs a rethink. I had the wings but don’t get them. They were covered in a sloppy sauce and eating them they weren’t crunchy but slime like, the Boston beans is like eating sweet sugar slop, but mac and cheese not bad. My friend had the chicken and waffles…. Not the best prepared, bit stringy. The burgers looked great along with the sundaes but save yourself a trip because the food quality could have been much better, expected better since place looks amazing. I wouldn’t go back but I would go to herbies or buddies burger heaven as the food quality is much better, but lovely staff.”

“As a couple that love holidaying in the states this place feels very incredibly authentic. The owners have done their homework with the food on offer and portion size. The atmosphere is friendly and warm and takes you exactly where its trying to. The staff were amazing and friendly not rushing us and letting us look at all the decor 10/10 experience all around. Will be a regular date night spot for us. We are mixed bag when it comes to food with one of us being vegan, neither of us were short for options which made my partner feel incredibly happy.”

“First visit to the much talked about diner, from my friends/family. I wasn't disappointed. Everything from the atmosphere, the fabulous music, to the food. It was so welcoming, that we stayed for almost 3 hours. Just to have breakfast. Grace, the lady who served us, was lovely too. It's just such a unique place, that it certainly leaves you wanting to go back. Which I definitely will. Thank you for a wonderful "experience".”
