About The Central Cafe

The Central Cafe is a chippy-style cafe in Stranraer, built around battered sausage suppers and hoki fish suppers. Chips come on their own or with pie, and chip rolls are also ordered. Pickled onions are available to go alongside. Orders go in at the till or on a tablet, so customers can choose whichever suits them. The cafe serves food to eat in, and seats are set out for anyone sitting down or waiting for their order.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips draw the most praise at The Central Cafe, with reviewers describing fresh, crispy battered fish, the Hoki and chips, and chips called lovely and perfect. Close behind are the pie and chips, chip rolls with generous portions, a battered sausage whose batter one diner liked, and pizza bites and mushy peas that one reviewer singled out. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, several mention good value, and one notes that orders can be placed at the till or on a tablet and that dogs are welcome. The caveat is consistency in the fryer. Two reviewers called it among the worst chippies they had tried, describing a sausage supper with only one sausage, cut down the middle, with hard, chewy batter, plus soggy or undercooked chips. A third found the king rib supper's batter so hard, like crunching through toffee, that it could not be eaten, though the rest of that meal was nicely cooked. One diner said the sausages and chips arrived hot and tasty, and the dog got two sausages to take away.

“Overall it was pretty good. Fair prices, service was about as long as I'd expect, and there are chairs to sit and wait. The chips were a good standard and the cooking oil clean. Pizza bites a big hit, battered fish crispy and fresh, mushy peas tasty, but one big disappointment, what the heck happened to the king rib supper? The batter was like a layer of rock that had been oven cooking since February. Even after he'd snapped a bit off, my partner couldn't eat it. It was like crunching through hard toffee. I'm assuming that this was a one-off because clearly the rest of the food was nicely cooked, and the fish had regular crispy edible batter on it. It does put us off visiting again, sorry.”

“There is some parking outside but it is permit/ disc controlled but as we arrived at 20:00 it didn’t apply. The ladies behind the counter were friendly and helpful and as we were dining in they advised us to take a seat and they would come and get the order. We had two sausages & chips (sausage supper), a battered sausage (one larger sausage) & chips, a bread roll, can of soft drink and two sausages to take away for the dog which came to approximately £23. The food came out promptly, hot and tasty. I particularly liked the batter on the sausage. The dog enjoyed his sausages. Overall a nice experience, I would definitely eat here again the next time I’m in Stranraer.”

“Have only used two times. First fish supper fish so over cooked almost broke my teeth on the batter and fish had disintegrated, chips undercooked and hard in the middle. Told by friends that must have got them on a bad day as normally great so have just given them another try. Sausage supper only one sausage which again so overcooked batter flat and chewy, the so called chips would be served as a bag of the scraps in my hometown only manager to find 8 full sized and fairly soft the rest went in the bin. I will never be there again as I can honestly say it's the worst chippy I have ever came across in my life.”
