About Zizzi Italian Restaurant St Andrews

Zizzi Italian Restaurant St Andrews is an Italian restaurant at 87 South St in St Andrews, built around a large tree growing in the middle of its dining room. The space stretches back deeper than the street front suggests. The menu covers pizzas and pastas, with vegetarian and vegan options clearly marked. The Vegan Lentil Ragu pairs spaghetti with Du Berry lentils, baby plum tomatoes, spinach and Genovese pesto. The Mediterranean Seabass is pan fried and served with baby potatoes, green beans, artichokes, roasted red peppers and olives. Complimentary fried pasta arrives at the table, and sweet potato fries and a side salad are available as sides. The restaurant takes walk-ins, and dogs are welcome. A braille menu is also available.

Customer Review Summary

Pasta draws the most praise, led by a vegan lentil ragu one diner ordered on repeat visits and a chorizo carbonara described as cooked perfectly, with smoky diced chorizo. Close behind are the sea bass, mentioned by two reviewers alongside sweet potato fries, and starters such as the garlic bite dish, fonduta and chorizo mozzarella bombe. A homemade chocolate mousse also earns a mention, with one diner scraping the bowl clean. Staff are described as friendly, attentive and polite across most reviews, and one reviewer strongly recommends making a reservation for an early evening visit. The complaints are few but specific. One diner said courses came too fast, with mains arriving while starter plates were still being cleared. Another found the pizzas flavourful but extremely thin, leaving a table of three still hungry in a dining room that felt cold. Reviewers also recall a complimentary fried pasta and a gluten free meal brought out first and separately for one guest.

“Nice and modern restaurant located centrally in St Andrews. Food was tasty and staff friendly and attentative (Amy was our waitress). The only let down was our courses being served far to fast. As starter plates were being cleared someone was there with our mains. A small break would be preferable.”

“Lovely food, went in for lunch this afternoon and had the fonduta, pollo grotto and chorizo mozzarella bombe. All the food was absolutely delicious. We were served by Matt and he was very polite and attentive. Would recommend to all.”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What a fantastic dinner at Zizzi St Andrews. I had the chorizo carbonara and it was absolutely delicious. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the diced chorizo had been cooked off beautifully, releasing all that smoky, rich flavour right through the dish. Every mouthful was packed with flavour without being overpowering. For dessert I had the homemade chocolate mousse, which was beautifully rich and had a slightly textured, genuinely homemade quality to it. I enjoyed it so much I scraped the bowl completely clean — which probably says more than I can! The service matched the food: warm, genuine and genuinely friendly. The restaurant itself is also a pleasant surprise. It doesn't look particularly large from the street, but it stretches right back into the building and has a really warm, inviting atmosphere. Delicious food, lovely ambience and excellent service. One of those dinners where everything just came together. I'd go back in a heartbeat.”
