About Maurie's Sandwich Shop

Maurie's Sandwich Shop is a sandwich shop at 72 The Avenue in Southampton, built around focaccia sandwiches that are baked fresh each day in limited numbers, so the shop advises pre-orders. The sandwich lineup includes the Maurie's Club and the Mamma Mia, and a changing special is listed as Girl dinner. Coffee is made as espresso and cortado, and a bakery selection of sweet treats sits alongside it, with cinnamon rolls among them. The shop runs as grab-and-go, with no tables inside, and it opens daily during the daytime only. Merch is sold at the counter too, including jumpers.

Customer Review Summary

Focaccia sandwiches draw the most praise, with reviewers calling them huge and massive, and one saying two fed three people. The Girl dinner special, with panko chicken in Caesar sauce, and Maurie's Club are singled out as delicious and fresh. Close behind are the friendly, welcoming staff and the coffee, with an espresso and a cortado both called really good, along with sweet treats like a bran and banana muffin. Criticism is mixed. One diner found the mamma mia meatballs half raw and flavourless and the hot honey chicken sandwich dry. Another's pre-ordered club arrived half filled with lettuce and no tomatoes. A couple of reviewers find the prices high, though one says the size justifies it. Reviewers also note there are no tables, only little benches outside. One regular describes a jumper order from the shop's merch where promised updates never came and repeated nudging was needed. Even the unhappy diner called the cookies and cinnamon rolls decent.

“Stopped by this little place this morning. Wonderful welcome, amazing coffee and a fabulous bran and banana muffin! Sat outside on the little benches in the warm sunshine too. What a brilliant little spot this is. Highly recommend and will revisit the next time Imnin Southampton 👍”

“Wow! What a stunning sandwich. The price seems like a lot until you see the size of the actual sandwich and taste the quality of it. definitely worth it and staff very lovely too!”

“I’m sad to leave this review because I thought I would give this place a good review. Until recently since opening of this shop I’ve been happy with the quality of the food and the overall experience of the place. The past years I’ve spent significant amount of money at this shop on sandwiches and their merch because I wanted to support local business but also because the food was good so I became a regular customer. Until recently, I’ve ordered a pair of jumpers that was meant to be delivered around February-March. The communication is poor and I had to nudge them at multiple occasions when they have replied to that they will update me for example “next week” or “I’ll speak to the makers and let you know!” It never happens and I have to nudge them regularly to get an update. It’s a very sad situation because I’ve talked so good about this place and have spend significant amount to just let down. Although they are friendly, I feel it’s a bit arrogance and lack of customer care and service that drive this place… I wouldn’t recommend this place for a long term relationship because they can’t handle a basic customer service.”

“me and my partner went in and got the mamma mia sandwich and the hot honey chicken. these sandwiches were very very underwhelming especially with how popular and loved they are. the meatballs were half raw and had no flavour, the sandwich itself looked unappealing and was so so dry and heavy to digest my partner had the hot honey and the chicken was flavourless and the sandwich itself again was so dry and underwhelming i would not recommend this place for what they are known for but their sweet treats like the cookies and cinnamon rolls are decent please do not fall for virality and save your time and money”

“Quite disappointed considering the hype this place gets. Definitely has potential maybe I’ve come on a bad day. I had a pre order and got the club and while expecting the pics they advertised my sandwich was half filled with lettuce and contained no tomatoes”
