About Flora Tea Rooms Dunwich Beach

Flora Tea Rooms Dunwich Beach is a cafe in Saxmundham, on Beach Rd beside Dunwich beach and museum. The pebble beach is a short walk away, and the marsh views stretch up toward Southwold. The kitchen serves fish and chips in haddock or cod, alongside hot desserts and cakes. The pear, treacle and walnut tart comes warmed, with cream. Dogs are welcome, and the cafe usually has a queue at peak times. Tea is served in cups with saucers, and coach-trip lunches get top-ups.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers calling the haddock delicious, reasonably priced and the best they have had here. Close behind is the dessert and hot drink side: one visitor singles out a pear, treacle and walnut tart served warm with cream, another a cappuccino, and a group tour was surprised with desserts and rounds of tea top ups. A salad with coleslaw, peppers and beetroot also earns a mention. Staff are described repeatedly as friendly, helpful and fast, including one who took allergies seriously. Outdoor seating, views over the marsh and toward Southwold, a free car park and dog friendly tables come up as extras. The caveats are mostly about crowding and cost. Inside tables are described as cramped and the room gets very busy, with one reviewer noting there was no cod and settling for haddock. One diner found a plate of three battered sausages and chips with a can of coke disappointing for just over sixteen pounds, citing overcooked batter and a hard centre in one sausage.

“Ate twice here with my family during our week stay up the road in Southwold, and both times it was great! Really tasty mains, but also they have a great hot dessert selection and cakes too, definitely recommend!”

“Great to eat outdoors on a sunny day with lovely views up to Southwold. If it's raining there is plenty of room inside too! The fish and chips were the best we have had here! Worth the trip”

“Recommended by friends, and not disappointed! Fish and chips was delicious, and reasonably priced. Staff helpful. It’s late September, so expect customers of a certain age group!! Fascinating trip to the Museum to learn Dunwich’s past, and a walk back through the woods!”

“We came to Floras Tea room as we were on a Mini run from Bury St Edmunds to Dunwich. Firstly, nice and welcoming. Staff all friendly. When we ordered our food (omelette, chips and salad/Haddock, chips and mushy peas) the staff were helpful with my allergies, which made me relax and feel happy to eat there. They had a very organised way of ordering the food and then delivering it once ready. The food was very fresh and tasty. It was nice to have a salad which WASN’T just lettuce, cucumber and tomato! It had coleslaw, peppers and beetroot too, delicious. It was very clean, as were the toilets.”

“The staff were excellent but disappointed by the food at this price point. Visited today as was working in the area and had limited options for somewhere to eat. Has 3 battered sausages, chips and a can of coke, just over £16 including a couple of sauces. Chips were ok but the sausage batter was overcooked and one of the sausages had an odd hard centre that I opted not to eat. Restaurant was busy and clean and as advised staff were excellent, food just not up to scratch given the prices charged”
