About Crab Shed Salcombe
Crab Shed Salcombe is a seafood restaurant on Gould Rd in Salcombe, right on the waterfront beside The Fish Quay. The kitchen cooks and picks its own local crab meat on the quay, using crab landed by day boats, and the chefs make their own stocks for the soups and sauces. Whole crab is cracked by hand at the table, and the menu also includes crab bisque and a fruits de mer platter for two. Reservations are required, and tables run on a two-hour limit. Dogs are welcome, with water bowls and biscuits provided for them.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most for the crab, from the crabby fries piled with crab to crab sandwiches, crab linguine and the bisque, with whole crab as the signature dish. Close behind are the lobster, scallops and mussels, and one reviewer calls the Fruit de mer for two huge, with a monster crab, mussels, prawns and scallops. Several praise the welcoming, helpful staff and the water views, and dog owners mention biscuits and water bowls on the terrace. The complaints are specific. One family waited about half an hour for their food order to be taken, found the prawn starter average and frozen-tasting, and saw little brown meat in the whole crabs. They were then asked to move outside at the table time limit while a child was still cracking a crab. Others found the lobster overcooked, the clams small, one terrace table without weather protection due to a broken awning, and the crabby fries only okay. One reviewer says booking gives more time at the table for the whole crab, and another ended with espressos before an onward walk.

“Honestly some of the best fresh fish I have eaten in years. Firstly, the staff were so welcoming and helpful. They explained the menu a nd answered any questions about where the fish were caught and what’s best in season at the moment. Definitely book ahead as it’s not a big place which makes for a much more personable experience. The chefs are exceptional. Day 1 we had scallops (best I’ve ever had), crab fries and a medium lobster on day 1. Absolutely delicious and loved it so much we booked straight away for the next day at lunch. Day 2 we went for the Fruit de mer for 2 people. IF YOU ENJOY SEAFOOD YOU MUST TRY THIS. It is huge. A monster crab, as many muscles as they can fit on a dish underneath, a generous portion of prawns, scallops (the same as the starter which were amazing), a sprinkle of clams, chips, bread and a side salad. It takes up the whole table and we were both beaming ear to ear. This made our day and will be coming back to Salcombe just to come here again.”

“Had a great evening last night at the Crab Shed. Having a glass of rosé Cremant and a perfectly cooked half a lobster over-looking the harbour…..it doesn’t get better than that. The chef knows how to cook a lobster, proteins were set perfectly. Very reasonable price for a large lobster between 2 people. The crabby fries were banging also! There was at least half a crab on each plate of fries. The staff were very accommodating, we just turned up without booking, 4 people and 3 dogs, and made sure we had everything we needed, and moved us to a better table without us asking. 10/10 experience and will go again when we visit Salcombe again.”

“Lovely setting right by the water, with a really nice atmosphere inside the restaurant. We visited as a family of four, with three of us ordering the whole crab rather than dressed crab because we wanted the experience of cracking it and getting the meat out ourselves. Unfortunately, the service was quite slow. We were seated at 6:30pm but waited around 30 minutes before anyone took our food order. The prawn starter was also disappointing, fairly average, tasted frozen and lacked flavour, particularly for £16. The mains were much better. The whole crabs looked fantastic, were a great size and the experience of cracking into them was exactly what we’d hoped for. The fish and chips was also very good. The only slight disappointment with the crab was that there seemed to be surprisingly little brown meat. The biggest issue came at 8:30pm. We appreciate there is a two-hour limit on tables, but one of our children was still very much in the middle of cracking and eating their crab when we were told we needed to leave the table and move outside to finish the meal. Given that we’d waited around half an hour for our food order to be taken in the first place, this felt particularly frustrating. We completely understand the need to manage tables, but if you serve whole crab as an experience that naturally takes time to eat, a little flexibility would have made a big difference. Being moved while one of our children was still eating unfortunately left a sour taste at the end of what had otherwise been an enjoyable meal.”

“The perfect setting for delicious crab sandwiches. We hadn't booked but the staff were so helpful and friendly. We sat overlooking the river with a gentle breeze under the shade of the large umbrellas. The sandwiches were packed with crab and the side salad was a small tasty colourful accompaniment. We also had a side of crabby chips, also highly recommended, a glass of cider. It was a perfect way to spend a lunchtime in Salcombe. Thoroughly recommended.”

“Absolutely glorious: comfortably the best meal we had while in Salcombe. The crab was superb. The bouillabaisse was excellent. Wine menu very good. Beer and gin menu strong too, including good non-/low-alcohol options. Service was really great: friendly, relaxed but super professional and helpful. Views out onto the creek. Go here and treat yourself to an excellent indy restaurant.”

“Located right on the waterfront and next to The Fish Quay, The Crab Shed offers relaxed and casual dining with interesting views of the beautiful Salcombe estuary. Our speciality is our own 100% hand-picked local crab meat, landed by local day boats then cooked and hand-picked by us right here on the quay. You won't find fresher seafood anywhere! Our chefs prepare all their own stocks from the freshest fish and shellfish and other locally sourced produce. This ensures that our Bouillabaisse, Bisque and various other soups and sauces are infused with those special seafood flavours. In addition to our restaurant area, our waterside terrace offers al fresco dining and is the perfect place to watch the fishing boats returning to The Fish Quay!”
