About The Cobbles Tea Room

The Cobbles Tea Room is a traditional tea room in Rye, set down a cobbled lane and open for over 70 years. The building is small and divided into several little rooms, with rose bushes out front. The cream tea serves scones with jam and cream alongside a pot of tea, while the afternoon tea puts a scone, butter, jam, a sandwich and a cake on one plate. Lunch runs to jacket potatoes with coleslaw and salad, plus toasted sandwiches and a ploughman's. Tables are walk-in only, with no booking, and the room can be busy, with some waits for service. A set menu option built around a sandwich is also available, and the kitchen bakes a gluten-free chocolate cake alongside its scones and other cakes.

Customer Review Summary

Cream teas draw the most praise, with reviewers describing freshly cooked scones served with generous jam and cream and a pot of tea that stretches to about three cups. A few call the scones fresh and the cakes tasty, though one says they are not the best scones they have had. Close behind is lunch: a jacket potato with bacon and brie served with coleslaw and salad, and a generous ploughmans, while others single out a well brewed Darjeeling, the lemonades and the coffee. The main complaints concern pace and the set menu. Reviewers describe slow service because waiters are overloaded, and one who arrived near closing found lunch no longer served. A set menu tuna mayo sandwich on basic bread felt bland to one diner, and the gluten free chocolate cake was dry. One reviewer recommends sitting out front by the rose bushes. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and polite even when busy, and one reviewer describes being offered tap water on a hot day.

“Staff was lovely, despite being busy they made sure they bring out everything that’s asked for. Amazing tea and scones.”

“Overall positive experience. There is no booking, just walk ins. Arrived here at 4 pm, just an hour before it closes down. There was little time to be seated in. A cozy small cafe. Unfortunately, there is no lunch served after 4 pm. Waiters are overloaded, so the service is a bit slow. Afternoon teas are standard, you will get a scone, butter, jam, a sandwich and a cake on a plate. Quality is good, scones are fresh, cakes tasty.”

“Visited this delightful tea room today , situated down a little cobbled lane in the historical town of Rye . I decided on a ploughmans and coffee , the portions are very generous and the ploughmans tasted as good as it looked. What stood out was the friendlyness of the staff. I was looked after by a lovely young man called Harry who informed me when I ordered my food he would be bringing me a glass of tap water as well as it was extremely hot so he was offering everyone water as well. He was so polite and pleasant , a real credit to the venue !”

“My partner really fancied jacket potato, so popped in to this hidden gem for lunch. Seating inside and outside, but as it was hot we chose indoors. The lemonades were incredible, tasting completely natural and not processed with additional sugars (however I cannot vouch for this), but well worth having on a hot day! I had a jacket potato with bacon and brie, a combination I've not had before on a jacket potato, but it really worked well and I would definitely have it again. The jacket potatoes were served with coleslaw and salad too so there was some healthy bits! Service was excellent and the staff were super friendly!”
