About Tortilla Reading

On Broad St in Reading, Tortilla Reading is a Mexican restaurant open daily and a short walk from Reading Station. Orders go through a self-order screen kiosk, where customers build their own burritos, tacos and quesadillas by picking each topping themselves. The Caesar chicken burrito is one of the burrito choices, and burrito bowls give another way to order the same fillings. Vegan and vegetarian options run through the build-your-own range, and margaritas are on the drinks list. The restaurant sits steps from The Oracle shopping centre, which suits a meal between shops. A queue forms at rush hour.

Customer Review Summary

The negatives are serious but come from a minority. One reviewer describes filthy tables, flies around the food, a dirty toilet with no soap and warm sour cream, and reports concern about hygiene. Another received a soggy, badly wrapped burrito and no tortilla chips with a delivery order, was refused a refund, and says the phone went unanswered. A third found almost no meat, no flavour and mostly rice, and said a nearby rival offers bigger portions.

“Went in today for a quick meal, haven’t had a burrito in ages since mission burrito has gone. Went in straight to the screen to order myself. Didn’t take a look around first which was my mistake. Ordered and went and sat down. Every single table was filthy, the floor looks like it hasn’t ever been cleaned. The worst part was there were dozens of flies hovering around the food. The worktop was filthy with stuff everywhere. The girl serving had gloves on but did not wash her hands once in the time we was in there or change her gloves after rubbing her face and touching her hair. This put me off instantly. My daughter needed the toilet so I went in with her to see the toilet lid up and the whole toilet bowl splattered with poo aswell as smeared all over the seat. Toilet roll all over the floor and enough dirt to see it hadn’t been cleaned for a couple of weeks at the very least. No soap in dispenser. The girl working was grumpy and slow. When the food came it was inedible. I begrudgingly tried to eat it due to being hungry and the £30 I had just spent on mine and my daughter’s dinner. The chicken was awful, concerned it had been sat there for days, it tasted vile. Same with the sour cream, it was warm in the pot with water on the top. I’m not usually one to complain but this place needs closing down. Will be reporting them to stop others wasting their money or getting poorly from extremely poor hygiene practice.”

“I was in Reading for work yesterday and stopped by Tortilla for a quick bite. I ordered a Caesar chicken burrito, and it was prepared by a lovely young man, Adam. Adam was friendly, polite, and clearly knew what he was doing. He was smiling throughout, made the experience welcoming, and genuinely seemed to enjoy his job. He wished me to enjoy my food, which was a nice personal touch. The portion size was generous and kept me full for the rest of the day. On top of that, the restaurant was nicely air-conditioned, making it the perfect place to escape the summer heat while enjoying a tasty meal. Overall, it was a great experience with excellent customer service, good food, and a comfortable atmosphere. I’ll definitely stop by again when I’m next in Reading.”

“Absolutely delicious place to eat. Customizable, good value for money and so tasty! Highly recommend. Lots of vegetarian options, and a nice place for families. Best mexican in Reading!!”

“The staff are fantastic and the food is unmissable! I have an allergy and often struggle to eat when out and about. The staff today were great. As a first time customer I was guided through my options (as I needed dairy free), gloves were changed (without me asking) and the burrito was one of the best I’ve ever had! Often getting fast food nowadays is an impersonal experience which is tricky when you have an allergy, this was a refreshing reminder that good customer service, friendly staff and great food is still available on the high street.”

“I am a regular customer of this Tortilla, mainly ordering through delivery apps and I’ve always enjoyed it. It WAS one of my favourite takeaways ever. Unfortunately, my experience on 15/06/26 at 12:40 has changed my mind. Whoever was working then and made my burrito should seriously reconsider where they work. First of all, my burrito was horribly wrapped and clearly too much sauce was given. It was soggy, falling apart and the wrapping foil was sticking to the burrito making it difficult to eat. Not only this, I ordered the medium meal deal but was not given my tortilla chips. I brought this up with Uber Eats to which they refused a refund as supposedly “the store confirms the tortilla chips were delivered”. I have essentially paid £16.50 for a burrito and drink! I’m meant to just suck it up and accept I lost so much money? I’m not sure who confirmed this, but they clearly did so to avoid getting into trouble. If you forget to pack an item for an order, you should own up to it and acknowledge the mistake as I totally understand sometimes you may forget. If the store admitted this I wouldnt bring this up. Furthermore, after I rang the store to try and explain the situation, the phone was not answered and my voicemail was ignored. I warn anyone ordering online and I hope the store manager considers who works for them and if they’re suitable enough as this was genuinely unacceptable. The quality of this tortilla has dropped since I started ordering in 2024…”
