About Winedown Preston

Winedown Preston is an underground wine bar in Preston, set in a cellar on Lancaster Road near Flag Market and reached down a flight of stairs. The space has previously served as a saddlery, a printing press and the bus drivers' canteen. The wine list draws on smaller producers, with organic, biodynamic and orange wines alongside lesser-known grapes, and wines are sold by the glass or by the bottle. The bartender helps undecided guests choose and lets people try wines first. A deli counter supplies cheese platters and charcuterie boards, and the beer selection includes Belgian beers. Candles and twinkly lights mark out the seating area, and games are played at the bar. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return above all for the wine list, praising its range and the knowledgeable bar staff who help the undecided choose. One visitor tried a Portuguese and a Georgian red, another singles out Belgian beers, and several mention being let to sample lots of wines. Cheese and charcuterie boards come close behind, with the cheese called stunning and a board featuring North West cheese, while nachos get a mention too. Reviewers describe the cellar down the stairs as unique, with candles and twinkly lights, and say the staff and crowd are friendly and welcoming. Bar games are mentioned as part of a relaxed visit. The main complaints are modest. One says the room was very warm and doubts air-con would fix it, and another found the platters only ok despite good wine. Several note the prices are reasonable, and one closes on a bill that was more than reasonable after an afternoon of games and conversation with the bartender.

“A time was had! This little place is a gem in Preston and the bartender is amazing! He is working this hot weekend - go see him. He let us try lots of lovely wines and we had the most beautiful Belgium beers -worth the trek down the stairs and visit to Preston alone. We just happened by this place before a late lunch but made sure we returned and we weren’t disappointed. We played games and just hung out for a few sips. The bill was more than reasonable. If you are in the area get here it’s an experience not to be missed. We played games and had food conversation with the bartender and ourselves. Well done and we will return to check in in the future.”

“A great place to escape the busy hustle of the high Street in Preston. Almost the kind of place you don't tell people about. Because we want it for ourselves. Unbelievable quality wine selection and all the cheese to go with it. The proprietor and his staff are just exactly what you want in such an intimate environment. Attentive. Love this place. Just go.”

“Love Winedown - what a gem of a bar! It is hidden away down some stairs so you have to keep an eye out for it. We had some wine and nachos were banging, the cheese was stunning. Obviously they have an incredible wine selection and the bar staff are very knowledgeable. Love it here, highly recommended.”

Highlights

“Preston's Best Kept Secret! Winedown is Preston's Unique Underground Wine Bar & Deli Counter. You'll find us hiding in a cellar on Lancaster Road, a stone's throw from both The Guild Hall and The Harris Museum. At different times the cellar has been home to Duk, Piccolinos, a saddlery, a printing press and the bus drivers' canteen! But we're convinced that we've now found the perfect use for this amazing, atmospheric cellar. We believe "Life is too short to drink boring wine!" so our list features wines from smaller producers, organic wines, biodynamic wines, lesser know grapes and ORANGE WINES! We don't neglect your stomach either! Our Deli Counter is home to a mighty collection of local, British and Continental cheeses and charcuterie!”
