About The Plump Duck
Beside Petersfield Lake on Heath Rd W, The Plump Duck is a coffee shop in Petersfield that is open daily. The cafe sells bags of feed for ducks and geese, so visitors can feed the birds that gather near the water, and it stocks dog treats and dog ice cream for dogs. The menu includes panini and cookies, and coffee is available with oat milk. Vegan cakes are on offer, and the strawberry milkshake comes with its ingredients checked for coeliac suitability. Orders are placed at the counter after queuing. Staff enforce a no-outside-food policy at the tables, so picnic food stays out of the cafe.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is the most frequent draw at this lakeside cafe, with reviewers praising a coffee with oat milk, a hot chocolate on a chilly morning, and a coffee after a walk round the lake. Close behind are the setting and the animals. Several describe feeding the ducks and geese with bags of feed from the cafe, and dog owners mention the dog treats and a dog ice cream. Reviewers also name a tasty panini, a cookie, vegan cakes and a sweet treat. The main complaint concerns outside food. Two parents report staff telling them off for having their own snacks at the table, one saying a man approached their seven year old alone, and both call the response rude. Another reviewer found a tuna and cheese panini flat and squashed and the service without a smile. One asks for more tables, some in the shade, and mentions a large flock of geese gathering near the cafe. One grandparent of a child with coeliac disease describes staff taking the syrup bag out of the machine to check the strawberry milkshake ingredients together.

“Out and about at Petersfield Heath on a childcare day, enjoying the company of our three-year-old grandson, who has coeliac disease. Added bonus was meeting our other two grandsons and our daughter there - much fun had in the sunshine. A coffee and refueling the boys needed, we are always very careful to check coeliac suitability. The staff at The Plump Duck were superb, checking every detail in the ingredients for their famous strawberry milkshake - even taking the syrup bag out of the machine and checking it with us. Excellent attention to detail and awareness of the importance of getting things right. Thanks!”

“This is so disappointing to write as we have visited this cafe multiple times over the years. We had a new baby and a toddler with us so obviously we had a lunch bag as most parents do. We were not intending to sit in The Plump Duck and eat the food, we simply wanted a drink to warm up. One of the staff members almost fell over himself running to the table to very rudely say we cannot have that. No hello, no friendly oh just to make you aware. He was so rude! We hadn’t even all sat down before he had jumped on us. Honestly if we hadn’t promised our little boy an ice cream we would have left. Also we had a new baby with us so for all he knew that could have contained the formula for the baby! This experience has really disappointed us, the rude nature of this employee, the lack of respect or thought for his customers! We felt far from welcome!”

“On arrival we got our 7 year old to sit at the table with his snacks while we queued for our food. Our 7 year old came up to us upset saying a man told him off and he wasn't allowed to eat there. We ordered our food and I spoke to the "manager " which in my opinion is a vile pathetic bully. He said it was policy that own picnic food wasn't allowed. We spent money on food and drink so it wasn't like we were taking up a table for no reason. His response was rude and my concern was he approached a child alone and upset him! The manager didn't see an issue at all! All I got told was he was a "professional and he could do what he liked". There wasn't even an apology for upsetting our child! Wouldn't recommend if you have a child only likes certain foods!! Doesn't even deserve a one star rating!”

“I come for the Dog Treats (the dogs love them and pull all the way from the carpark until we get here) and stay for the Coffee with Oat Milk and Vegan Cakes”
