About Bango Kitchen

Bango Kitchen is a Japanese restaurant in Penryn, serving a Pan Asian menu from a riverside building at 11B Commercial Rd. The kitchen is open, so diners can watch the chefs cook. Seating runs mostly to long communal tables, with only a few smaller ones, and a table by the back window looks onto the river. The menu includes a beef brisket and cheddar bao bun, dynamite cabbage served as a wedge, and salt, pepper and chilli squid. Coffee comes from Olfactory Roasters, and the drinks list covers cocktails, beers, wines and cider. The restaurant does not take bookings, and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

The dynamite cabbage wedge is the dish reviewers raise most, with one table ordering a second portion and others calling it delicious. Close behind are the brisket bao, served with a vermicelli noodle salad in one account, and the squid, whether salt, pepper and chilli or crispy squid noodles, which one diner called out of this world. Crispy pork belly, Biang Biang noodles, fried chicken and a local beer also draw praise. Reviewers describe friendly, helpful staff, including with dietary requirements, and mention the open kitchen, a river view from a back window and a welcome for dogs. The main reservations come from one reviewer who found the pork belly noodles, squid noodles and katsu mayo intensely salty and heavy on curry paste, wanting pickled vegetables for balance, and who disliked the long communal tables with only three smaller ones. Another found the service a little forgetful. One diner's banana nuggets with a miso, peanut and caramel dip had her telling everyone she met about them afterward.

“Very tasty food. Highly recommend the Dynamite Cabbage - it was so frickin good we had no choice but to order a second portion! The Biang Biang Noodles were delicious, and husband was thrilled with his Brisket Bao and Salt, Pepper & Chilli Squid. Friendly service and relaxed setting. We’ll definitely be back.”

“Had some awesome food here. The fried chicken was amazing, the cabbage was delicious (a sentence I’ve never used before) & the local beer was perfect. My girl had the banana nuggets with miso/peanut/caramel dip & everybody she has met since has heard about them. Delicious!”

“My wife and I came here while on holiday and both chose the Beef Brisket and Cheddar Bao bun which was utterly delicious and very flavousome. The vermicelli noodle salad that came with it was absolutely incredible and was beautifully presented. We had the Katsu banana breadcrumb pudding with caramel miso dip which again was wonderfully presented and very tasty. Staff service was friendly, personal and attentive. We would definitely eat here again!”

“This is a great place to eat and I would definitely recommend it. There is a mix of Japanese and south Korean food and likely other countries too. The food is great quality and as you would expect you pay a bit more for it. There are many affordable options on the menu too for the student or family. The service was friendly although a little forgetful.”
