Quick info
About Stein's Fish & Chips
Stein's Fish & Chips is a seafood restaurant in Padstow at Unit 1 S Quay, overlooking the Camel Estuary. Its Forgotten Fish special changes daily with the fish used, and the chips are cooked in beef dripping. Fish comes battered or grilled, and the kitchen makes its own batter, including a gluten free version. The menu also includes halloumi dishes, among them a halloumi saganaki. A family sharing platter for four brings together fish, scampi, halloumi, chips, onion rings and salad, with dips and sauces. Dogs are welcome, and a queue for a seat is usual at busy times. Eating in, unlimited chips are available as an add-on.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the battered fish, described as fresh with light, crispy batter and not greasy, with the cod and a prawn starter singled out as tasty. Close behind are the chips, which one reviewer noted were cooked in beef dripping, and the Forgotten Fish, which was ling that day and came as a huge portion. A family platter of fish, scampi, halloumi, onion rings and salad suited a group of four, and vegetarians were catered for with a halloumi burger and halloumi saganaki. Value is the main complaint. Several call the cod small for the price, one notes chips cost extra, and a few say anyone expecting more than a local chippy may be disappointed. Others found the haddock batter only acceptable, the scampi short of a peas or salad garnish, and the mushy peas lacking in flavour. Service splits between friendly staff, a slow and confused team, and one takeaway customer who barely got a hello. One party was turned away over an electrical fault. One takeaway came with the fish boxed apart from the chips, keeping the batter crisp beside a big lemon wedge.

“So initially the price does seem steep and not too competitive, however, these are some of the best fish and chips in the area. The fish is fresh with delicious light and crispy batter, and the chips are fantastic. Nothing feels too greasy. The fish was boxed separately to the chips so the batter didn't get soggy. It was also piping hot. Salt and vinegar is in sachets. Not everyone's preference, however, you can take as many as you need. A nice big lemon wedge was in the box with the fish too. Excellent food. The service - it wasn't bad, it just wasn't welcoming. I would expect to at least get a "hello" or "what can I get for you", but I barely got a grunt. I think this needs some improvement. Apart from that, we thoroughly enjoyed our takeaway and didn't mind paying a premium price for such good quality food.”

“I was quite disappointed with the food. There was a lot of advertising and promotion, so I expected much better quality. Unfortunately, the food was below my expectations and didn’t taste as good as I had hoped. I’ve eaten the same type of food at another place, and the quality there was much better. Hopefully, they can improve the quality of their food in the future. Mike's fish and chips Southampton Fourmarks fish and chips”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great family platter and much better value than we remembered This was our third visit to Stein's Fish & Chips in Padstow. On previous visits we'd always come away thinking it was quite expensive for fish and chips, but this time, having compared the prices with some of the pubs and restaurants we'd eaten at locally, it actually felt much more comparable. While queuing we spotted the family platter for four and decided to give it a try. For two adults and two children it was absolutely perfect. The platter came loaded with fish, scampi, halloumi, chips, onion rings and salad, along with dips and sauces. There was a really good mixture for everyone to pick at and it was just about the right amount to fill all four of us without ordering loads of separate meals. Including our drinks, the total bill came to around £65 for the four of us, which we thought was pretty reasonable considering where we were and what we had. The restaurant itself was clean and welcoming, with nice décor and a good atmosphere, and the staff were friendly throughout. There's a wide choice of fish and seafood as well as soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. One other thing worth knowing if you're particularly hungry is that when eating in you can get unlimited chips for £4, which could be excellent value! After three visits, this was probably the one where we felt we'd found the best way of eating here as a family. The sharing platter worked brilliantly for us and we'd happily have it again. Thoroughly recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”

“Food came quick and tasted pretty good, albeit small fish and not the best value for £20 (with chips included). Service was great. They had one accessible toilet and there was a queue to use it sometimes. Overall nice but if you're expecting anything more than your local chippy then you may feel a little disappointed.”

“We had been here once before in 2016, and remembered having to queue outside for ages before getting a seat. No such issue this time, we walked in and were seated immediately. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and helpful with the few questions we had around the menu. My daughter and I ordered Fish & Chips. I opted for the Cod, she picked the Forgotten Fish option. Despite hers being the cheapest item, I was envious because her portion was huge and it tasted better than mine. The fish they were using for it that day was Ling. Our Chips were cooked in Beef Dripping and were delicious. I fancied a Beer too, so I enjoyed a Pint of Korev Lager. My wife and other daughter both required vegetarian meals. My wife went for the Halloumi Burger, my Daughter had the Halloumi Saganaki and requested Vegetarian Chips. Everyone was well catered for and we all enjoyed our meals.”
