“On Tuesday 30th June, I visited The Townhouse with three friends (aged 21, 21, and 20) as we were excited to try the new bar in town. When we arrived, there were fewer than five people inside. The bartender asked us all to show ID, which we were happy to do so. After seeing my ID and hearing me mention that one member of our group was 20, he immediately refused to serve us, stating that the venue was a 21+ establishment and that "it's very strict here." I left feeling disappointed and confused by this experience. The legal drinking age in the UK is 18, so being refused solely because one person in our group was 20 came as a surprise. If The Townhouse operates a strict 21+ policy, this should be made clear before customers enter, whether on its website, social media, or at the entrance. What made the experience more frustrating was that it was a quiet Tuesday evening with very few customers present, so the refusal felt unnecessary and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, our first impression was that we were turned away simply because we were younger, rather than because of any issue with our behaviour or identification. I hope the venue is clearer about its age policy in future so that others don't make the trip only to be turned away unexpectedly.”
