About Biddy's Tea Room

On Lower Goat Lane in Norwich, Biddy's Tea Room has run as a tea room at 8-10 Lower Goat Ln since 2010. The list runs to over 50 tea blends, including almond tea and the house Biddy's blend, served in enamel tea pots. The afternoon tea is build-your-own, so guests choose their own sandwiches, which are made fresh and can have the fillings swapped, along with a scone, a cake and a pot of tea. The lavender scone is one of the scone options, and carrot cake is among the cakes. Gluten free and dairy free options are available, as are vegetarian sandwiches. The decor mixes Victoriana with 1940s pieces, with window seats at the front and more seating upstairs on the first floor. Afternoon tea is by reservation, and no alcohol is served. The team will give you a box to take leftovers home.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the build-your-own afternoon tea, praising the generous portions and the sandwiches, scones and cakes, including a lavender scone, carrot cake and a vegetarian hummus, carrot and avocado sandwich. Close behind, the Biddy's blend and almond teas, the biscoff brownie and the millionaire shortbread draw praise, and a few mention gluten free and dairy free options. Several describe taking leftovers home in a box. Service is the recurring complaint. Reviewers describe slow arrivals and staff who seemed disengaged. One waited about 15 minutes for an order to be taken, then a long stretch for the tea and food, with no refills offered. Another received dry, cold scones and lukewarm tea, with food arriving only after a complaint, and was offered a free meal. Others call the staff friendly but a little slow. A couple of diners note a shortage of alcohol, and one mentions an uneven floor marked with hazard tape. One birthday party was happy to leave with a doggy bag after the cake proved too large to finish.

“Took my aunt to Biddys Norwich for her 90th birthday celebration. Absolutely delicious food, helpful staff and happy for me to decorate the table. Charlie was great; couldn't do enough for us. Particularly like the build your own option afternoon tea as there's everyone's favourites available. Would definitely go back and the Millionaire Shortbread was to die for!”

“Searched for the place first and somehow ended up in the unoccupied space opposite before realising it was actually on the other side lol 😄 Once we found it, we had such a lovely experience. The atmosphere was great, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the afternoon tea was absolutely amazing. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted lovely. Highly recommended ♥️”

“You can only book for afternoon tea so it is can be a bit tricky to get seated on busy days. Cakes are enormous and a good selection of gluten free and dairy free options, some also without egg. A vast range of white, green, black teas served in enamel tea pots. The decor is a blend of Victoriana, 40s and generally vintage. The floor is very uneven but marked up with hazard tape. Be careful as you move around on the first floor! Service is always kind and friendly, if a little slow. Love that it is woman-owned and led. The street is cute outside and very well located for a wander round the city centre after your tea and cake. Everyone we brought to visit, loves it here from age 10 up to 83 years old.”

“An underwhelming experience. We went here for afternoon tea as a couple of members of our group had been given gift vouchers. Overall the service was very poor. From sitting down it took about 15 minutes for someone to come over to take our order. From then it was about 45 minutes before the 4 pots of tea turned up. The food was about another 15 minutes behind that. From sitting down to actually getting everything it was about 1 hour 15 minutes. The food was nice. My chicken, stuffing and cranberry sandwich was nice but compared to other sandwiches, like the ham Brie and chili Jam ones, were small and not much chicken was in it. The scone and cakes were good. I had a lemon drizzle cake and it was lovely. Everyone enjoyed the cakes. The biggest issue was there was no interest from the staff. No one came over to ask if everything was okay. Not one offered any tea refills. The staff were not interested. The restaurant was busy but the place is badly run. No one seemed to be in charge and actually overseeing what was going on. When we went to leave I got up to ask at the front cash register if we could have a take away box and the bill. The young girl just said we had to pay at the till and didn't even move to get a box. I don't know if we had offended the staff in some way as they had zero interest of bothering to serve us but I don't think any of us will bother returning. You would be better spending your money elsewhere if you want a nice afternoon tea experience.”

“Lovely location, nicely decorated, tucked down a charming Norwich street, and that’s where the positives end. I’ve had afternoon tea all over the world and I’m a keen baker. These were the driest scones I’ve ever been served. Stone cold, rock hard, and requiring a sawing motion to get through, like cutting concrete. The sandwich bread was nearly as dry. One bite of the scone was enough and I didn’t even attempt the cake. We ate the sandwiches, drank lukewarm tea, and left. Service was painfully slow and utterly disengaged. No one explained how the build your own afternoon tea worked. Tea took 15 minutes to arrive. The food took over an hour and only appeared after we complained, and most of it was inedible. Staff were standing around scrolling on their phones despite it not being busy. I raised these issues with a blonde female staff member and received a half-hearted apology and an offer not to pay, which frankly says it all. Whoever is running this place needs to invest in proper hospitality and leadership training and leadership before the staff run it straight into the ground.”
