About Toby Carvery Newton Abbot
Toby Carvery Newton Abbot is a carvery restaurant on Penn Inn Roundabout in Newton Abbot. A member of staff carves the meat at a hot counter, and it comes with Yorkshire pudding and pigs in blankets. The vegetable choice is refreshed when the counter runs low. Breakfast is an all-you-can-eat buffet with unlimited tea and coffee, and its limited menu includes toast with butter, jam or marmalade. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and dogs are welcome. The restaurant sits just off the A381, between Torbay and Exeter.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the carvery roast, praising the beef and a good choice of veg at a price several call sensible or reasonable. Friendly, attentive staff come up repeatedly, with one server and the person carving the meat singled out for politeness and quick service, and one table was kept waiting while the veg was refreshed. Close behind is the breakfast, where regulars mention a warm welcome and unlimited tea and coffee, though one finds the menu limited, with only butter, jam or marmalade for toast. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the meat cold and fatty, the Yorkshire pudding like cardboard, the veg dry and the pigs in blankets overcooked. Another waited a long stretch at a depleted hot counter while staff gathered in the bar corner. A third had grisly meat sent back and received melted ice cream. Several reviewers also mention the dog-friendly setting and the walk down to the river behind.

“We visited this evening at about 4pm. Our server max was amazing! He was friendly and quick with his service! Cannot fault him enough. The chef frank was superb so polite and had a good conversation with me and my family. The food was amazing and very nice! Sad we live far away and was visiting on holiday as we would love to come again. Thankyou guys for this brilliant time.”

“Went for breakfast which was very reasonable.was quiet when we visited at 9am but was getting busy when we left at 10:30am. Menu is limited and the only options for toast are butter jam or marmalade. Other options for kids would have been good. Unlimited tea and coffee is a bonus though.”

“Very disappointing experience – 1pm booking, 4th August 2026 We booked Toby Carvery for 1pm after completing a 2.6-mile walk for The Grand Appeal in memory of my daughter. She sadly passed away at just 26 days old, and the walk marked what would have been her 6-month milestone. It was meant to be a special day for our family to be together. Unfortunately, the meal was extremely disappointing. The meat was thrown onto the plate, was very grisly and had to be sent back. We were also told we were being rude when we raised our concerns. The ice cream arrived somewhat melted and spilled out of the bowl when we tried to scoop it. Sadly, everyone in our group subsequently suffered from food poisoning. After such an emotional and meaningful day, we had hoped for a nice family meal to finish it off. Instead, the experience was incredibly disappointing. We certainly won’t be returning. Spent £56 on 2 standards, a £1.99 upgrade, £1 child’s meal, ice cream and 5 drinks WITH 25% OFF!!! Member of staff looks underage to be serving people.”

“Visited today for a carvery dinner. I just wanted to say what a credit the employees here are to the place. (Specifically the male waiter who was taking the payments and the man who with the tattoos, beard, who was serving the meat etc at 4pm today!) the man who was serving the food was honestly the most loveliest, well mannered polite man I’ve come across. He made sure we were okay with everything, addressed people sincerely with manners and consistently kept a smile on his face with just such a “happy to be here” vibe. It’s been a while since I’ve walked into a place that had me left feeling like I’d come back. Thank you & keep up the good work! It does show. Food was also lovely😊”

“For what you pay here you cannot fault it. We visit regularly for breakfast. We always get a warm welcome. The team go the extra mile to make sure we enjoy our visit. There's parking and it's dog friendly with a great walk down to the river and estuary behind.”
