About Birch Newcastle

Birch Newcastle is a vegetarian specialty coffee shop at 51 Central Promenade in Newcastle, with views of the sea from the promenade. An on-site bakery makes the bread, cakes and scones fresh, and the menu is vegetarian and vegan throughout. Soup of the day comes with toasted sourdough, and the veggie sandwich is also served on sourdough, with a poached egg available as an add-on. Protein oats are on the menu for those who want something lighter to start the day. The shop is open daily, daytime only. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Soup is the dish diners return to most, with specials such as tandoori spiced cauliflower, curried parsnip, white bean and garlic, and lentil and coconut broth served with toasted sourdough. Reviewers describe the flavours as unusual and filling, and one says the soup is always fantastic. Close behind is the veggie sandwich on sourdough, which one regular calls consistently excellent, especially with a poached egg, along with the Protein Oats and overnight oats. One diner praises a special of beetroot, grapefruit and roasted spiced cauliflower on thick sourdough toast, and another the beans on toast with cherry tomatoes. Reviewers also commend the friendly, welcoming staff, the coffee, the sea view along the promenade and the welcome for dogs, and one notes the bread and cakes are made on site. The recurring caveat is that the cafe is very busy and popular, so one reviewer says a seat is not guaranteed, though another reports food still arrived quickly. One parent enjoyed a Sunday lunch so much that they came back the next day for granola.

“Simply delicious 😋. Called for late lunch and had the Soup of the day (Tandoori Spiced Cauliflower Soup). The soup was accompanied along with croutons and cress as well as toasted sourdough. Absolutely sensational flavours and very filling. Worth every penny and it’s been a long time from we have had a lunch for two under £20. Amazing staff and extremely friendly. Well worth a visit 😊”

“Birch is a delightful cheery cafe on Newcastle promenade and my favourite place to go after an early morning walk on the beach. Their soups and baked goods are delicious. My favourite is their amazing veggie sandwich on sourdough. It is consistently excellent and sets me up for the day especially if you add a poached egg! Staff are welcoming and the view to the sea makes Birch the go to cafe in town even if you’re not vegetarian and I’m not!! 5 stars all the way 😁”

“Food was top tier and came quickly even though it was really busy. I also spilled a glass of water which they helped out quickly. I got the Special which was just denominated they have such great unique flavours. It had babha ganoche, beetroot, grapefruit, roasted spiced calliflour on a thick slice of the fluffiest sourdough toast. I’m sure I’m forgetting something else too but it was delicious. I also got to try the beans and toast which was super good and you could see how fresh it was with the cherry tomatoes still intact. The soup special was also unreal and was something I had never had before it was white bean and garlic. It was absolutely flavour bursting. Please I beg I need the recipe asap. The atmosphere was also really nice I would have also loved to try the sweet things as they look fennomenel aswell. it’s to bad I live way down at the bottom of the south in county Cork. This place will be missed and hopefully I might return.”
