About Chucho's The Real Mexican Food

Chucho's The Real Mexican Food is a Mexican restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, on Shields Rd, founded by a husband and wife team, with Jesus coming from Veracruz. The kitchen makes its corn tortillas and chilli salsas in house, and the tacos are served on fresh corn tortillas with guacamole on top. Tacos are ordered as a selection of three or more, so a table can mix fillings such as carnitas, Dorado fish and haggis. Chorizo enchiladas, burritos, nachos and a chicken quesadilla round out the menu, with churros for dessert. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are part of the offer. The drinks list includes a spicy margarita and Mexican bottled beers. Tables are set with floral tablecloths and deep blue plates.

Customer Review Summary

Tacos are the draw at Chucho's, with reviewers praising the fresh corn tortillas, generous fillings and the option to order a selection of three or more. Pulled pork, carnitas, the Dorado and a haggis taco get specific mentions, while chorizo enchiladas, a burrito full of meat, nachos and chicken quesadillas come up close behind. Churros and a spicy margarita are also singled out, and several diners point to plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices. Friendly, attentive staff are mentioned repeatedly, including one waiter who kept the room going on his own for a stretch, and a few call the value good. The main reservation comes from one spice-loving reviewer who found the tacos lacking in heat and wished hot sauces were on the table, planning to ask for extra hot salsa next time. Another notes the draught taps were off, leaving only bottled Mexican beers. Several say they plan to return to work through the rest of the taco menu, and one staff recommendation led a couple to order six tacos between them.

“We had an absolutely fantastic meal here. The vibrant floral tablecloths immediately put us in a great mood as soon as we sat down. The food was incredible, especially the fresh tacos topped with generous scoops of guacamole. Everything was presented beautifully on those deep blue plates. It was the perfect spot for a lively dinner on Shields Road. We will definitely be back for more soon.”

“Loved this place, great authentic food for amazing value, loads of choice, and friendly staff. Super relaxed atmosphere. Special mention to the waiter who was on his own for a period of time and was running around to make sure everyone was happy whilst taking orders and making drinks. I'll be back to try the rest of the tacos!”

“Ate lunch at Chucho’s on a Sunday when visiting family in Newcastle and we were so impressed by it. We had a booking so there was no wait for the table for 4 and a high chair. The staff were friendly & welcoming and attentive throughout. We had a selection of tacos between us (and there were still a number we could go back for!) which were all delicious. Generously filled and with fresh corn tortillas they were great. We also shared nachos which were the most beautifully presented nachos I have seen. Our young nephew nibbled at a chicken quesadilla that he seemed happy with too! There were a selection of Mexican bottled beers available (the draught taps were off) to wash it all down All in all it was a brilliant lunch, kept me full for the day and was great value. I wish we lived close enough to go back more often”

“Lovely authentic food. The staff are lovely and attentive. The food was unreal. Got the 3 tacos for £12. Pulled pork was the best of the bunch but the Dorado and the final one (can't actually remember) were good too. The spicy margarita was good, and the churros were mint too. Highly recommend.”

“Founded by husband and wife team Jesus (from Veracruz, Mexico) and Emma, the Chucho's team is passionate about bringing a real taste of Mexico to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Try their famous tacos or other snacks like quesadillas, nachos and churros. All the food is homemade including soft corn tortillas and chilli salsas.”
