About Hanahana
Hanahana is a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant at 45 Bath Ln in Newcastle Upon Tyne, with eight grill stations where the chefs cook each meal in front of guests. Diners sit around the cooking station and share a table with other guests. The chefs perform tricks and a fire show, throw eggs as part of the act, and let guests try some of the tricks themselves. The menu includes set menus and banquet options, among them a seafood and meat set menu and a two course menu. Egg fried rice is a regular dish, and scallops come in several forms, including Hokkaido scallops and a scallop served in its shell. Reservations are required. Free shots are offered before guests leave.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return for the live teppanyaki show, with chefs cooking at the grill, performing tricks and fire, and keeping children and groups entertained. Close behind is the seafood, with the Hokkaido scallops, a scallop grilled in its shell, and the lobster singled out, while the banquet and set menus of seafood, chicken and steak also draw praise. Egg fried rice divides opinion: one reviewer calls it the best they have had, another found it bland and reliant on soy sauce. A few say the atmosphere outshines the food, which one calls standard for teppanyaki, with a good tofu dish but overcooked calamari. The sharpest complaint describes tough, overcooked pork, a staff member who could not say which cut it was, a start delayed while tables filled, seating beside strangers, and dislike of eggs thrown on the floor. Another reviewer notes the decor feels a little dated. Several mention friendly staff, and one recalls free shots handed out before leaving.

“We got from the two course menu. Very reasonable and very tasty. The cooking staff were great, fun and pleasant. The waitress must have been having a bad day, but it didn't effect the service. I would recommend to anyone who wants a fun dining experience.”

“Very disappointing experience — £65 and still went home hungry. My biggest mistake was not realising beforehand that the restaurant involves throwing eggs onto the floor as part of the teppanyaki experience. Had I known, I would not have gone. I personally found the whole activity wasteful and unpleasant, and it completely put me off the experience. The food was also extremely disappointing. It is advertised as Japanese food, but what we were served tasted more like poor-quality Chinese takeaway. The egg fried rice was incredibly bland and seemed to rely almost entirely on soy sauce for flavour. I also found making teriyaki chicken on a teppanyaki grill rather strange. We waited around 20 minutes before anything could even start because they were waiting for enough people to fill the tables. My friend and I were then seated directly next to strangers from another group, which made the experience feel cramped and uncomfortable rather than enjoyable. When I ordered pork for the teppanyaki, I asked the staff member which cut of pork it was. The response was simply, “I don’t know.” Unfortunately, the pork itself was extremely tough and overcooked, and I couldn't finish it. After spending £65, I went home still hungry. For that price, I expected considerably better food, service and overall experience. Never again.”

“Yum, I really love this place! I’ve been here so many times and I’m always happy to come back. The customer service is good, the staff are friendly and welcoming, and the food is always delicious. It’s a lovely place to come and enjoy a good meal. Definitely one of my favourite places and I’ll be back again! ☺️”

“Really enjoyed the experience here! The food was pretty standard for teppanyaki, but the live cooking and fire performance were definitely the highlight. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly. Would definitely come back for the experience, especially with friends.”

“What an incredible dining experience. We had such a wonderful evening and everything was absolutely spot on. The food was fresh and bursting with flavor. I especially loved the perfectly grilled scallop served in its shell; it was a real highlight. Each dish was presented beautifully on the plates. We will definitely be back again soon. This place is a gem in Newcastle and I cannot recommend it highly enough.”
