Quick info
About The Black Lion - New Quay, West Wales
The Black Lion is a pub on a hill above New Quay in West Wales, with nine simple rooms that look out to sea and a free breakfast included. The bar pours beer and cider on tap, including Alpacalypse from Salt Brewery, and the drinks list also covers non-alcoholic options. In the kitchen, home-cooked chilli is on the menu, and Sunday lunch is a roast chicken. A covered area at the back has a screen for watching sports, and a play area sits out behind the pub for kids. The pub is a stop on the way back from the beach, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
The beer garden and its sea view come up most, with reviewers describing a large outdoor space, a covered area with a screen for sports, and a play area for kids. Drinks sit close behind: the cider and beer draw praise, one reviewer singles out Alpacalypse from Salt Brewery on tap, and another notes the range of non-alcoholic options. Where food was served, diners mention a roast chicken Sunday lunch, a chilli, a chicken curry, a burger and a large steak with chips, often with big portions and good value. The recurring complaint is that food was not being served on several visits, so multiple reviewers could not try it and one was unsure why. Others note a dark table at the back of the restaurant where one party could not see their plates, and salt that was hard to find until a meal was nearly finished. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one group was told their tip would be split among the workers.

“I love this pub's beer garden as the view is beautiful, they also have a covered area with a TV to watch the footie ⚽️ the pub itself has lots of character, when we visited in September they have stopped serving food for the foreseeable future, not sure why?”

“Friendly staff, reasonable prices for drinks, food not served so cannot comment. Wonderful view from garden. Airey and well designed pub inside. A great stop after walking up a big hill.”

“Staff lovely. We're seated in the middle at the back of the restaurant but so dark we couldn't see our food. Lights left and right but definitely needs a table lamp on the middle table as it really was impossible for us to see the food on our plate.”

“Can’t rate the food as not currently serving but the pub, landlord, clientele and view is fantastic. Popped in for drinks whilst on holiday last week and was made to feel very welcome. The outdoor area is fantastic and well maintained and the choice of drinks, including non-alcoholic, is impressive. Would love to have it as my local!”

“Fantastic pub! Didn't sample the food but the cider went down a treat. Great beer garden with plenty of space for us all! Would definitely recommend this place on a nice summers day/evening! Staff were great and couldn't be more helpful.”
