About The Bay Cafe ( Blackburn Chippy )

At 2 Nelson St in Morecambe, The Bay Cafe ( Blackburn Chippy ) is a fish and chips shop that cooks its fish and chips fresh to order, so a short wait is possible. Fish comes in different sizes, and a mini portion of fish and chips is also offered. The chips are a mix of small crispy ones and bigger ones, and chip butties are on the menu too. Mushy peas and Yorkshire tea sit alongside. Vegetarian items and a gluten free battered fish and chips widen the choice for those with dietary needs. A small cafe area with table service lets customers sit in. Payment is cash only. A separate section serves ice cream, donuts and drinks.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the fish and chips themselves, with the fried-to-order fish and its batter singled out most, and chips described as a mix of small crispy ones and bigger ones, reminiscent of chips from decades ago. Close behind are the friendly staff and owners, who several say chat with a clearly local crowd, and the table service in the small cafe. Mini fish and chips, chip butties, proper mushy peas and a cup of Yorkshire tea also get mentions, along with an ice cream section. Several call the portions big and the value good, and a few note that cooking to order takes a little while and that the shop is cash only. Two reviewers were strongly disappointed, though. One said the batter was mushy and fell off a greasy fish, and the chips were scraps they ended up throwing in the bin after driving a fair way for the mini fish and chips. Another found grease running from the fish, soggy batter inside and rubbery chips with a funny taste. One reviewer noted there are no fresh salads or real coffee, accepting it as a small corner spot.

“I saw the mini fish and chips on facebook. I drove a fair way to test them. The price is right and the amount was just right but I could not eat it and ended up throwing in bin. The chips were just scraps and very greasy. The fish was cooked but the batter was mushy and fell off revealing a very greasy fish. Not impressed.”

“This is the best fish and chip shop in Morecambe. The options to have different size fish is a welcome offer. The fish and batter are perfectly fried and the chips, well they're just perfect too, they remind me of chips in 60s - 70s, they're not all the same size and NOT fat and tasteless. I like my chips the way Blackburns fry them, I enjoy picking out the smaller ones first and some can be crunchy and then I tend to finish off with the bigger ones. Everything is fried to perfection 👌 The servers are friendly and if you don't want to takeaway then you can sit in their neat little cafe. I've tried other chip shops in the past but always kept going back to Blackburn's because none compared to Blackburn's excellents. I think they deserve a chip shop award. Thank you 😊 for your service over the years.”

“Lee was great . Providing a polite and fair service with a smile. I liked that they had a section for ice cream, for donuts, drinks and sulverners ....the lady called winter, served a great ice cream too... Fish & chips £11 ...not bad”

“Awful. Lot grease came out of the fish. Batter was soggy on the inside. Chips were more like greasy fries and full of scrappy bits. They had a funny taste and were rubbery. Peas were ok. Cost £12.30.”
