About Turnip The Beet

Turnip The Beet is a deli on Killearn Mill Business Park, directly off the A81 and right on mile 8 of the West Highland Way, so it serves walkers and hikers on the route as well as visitors arriving by road. The menu leans on naan-based sandwiches, including a naan toastie and a bacon, brie and chilli naanwich, alongside a vegetarian haggis sausage roll. Wraps, baps, baguettes and focaccia fill out the range, and the kitchen also makes soups and baking. Coffee is freshly ground and local. Seating is first come first served. A gift shop stocks handpicked pieces from independent makers, including fridge magnets and other souvenirs.

Customer Review Summary

Walkers on the West Highland Way most often stop for the naan-based sandwiches, with reviewers naming the bacon, brie and chilli naanwich and the naan toastie with ham and cheese. Close behind is the vegetarian haggis sausage roll, along with the falafel wrap, pakora wrap, onion bhaji wrap and a pumpkin soup of the day. Reviewers also mention a caramel latte, a chai latte, a brownie with caramel and a big slice of cake. The gift shop gets repeated praise for its souvenirs, down to the fridge magnets, and several describe friendly, quick service and free water refills for hikers. The main caveat is the setting. One reviewer found the surroundings quite grim for a spot on the trail, and another says Google Maps sent them up a single track road rather than directly off the A81. One reviewer who stopped twice came back four days later for bacon and sausage baps and left with baguettes and bhaji wraps to take home.

“Loved this place! The food was delicious and a great stop along the way. So many lovely bits and bobs on sale there that would make perfect gifts. If I wasn’t constrained by having to carry it all I would’ve needed to be held back! We tried the naan toastie, pakora wrap, curry & a big slice of cake. All delicious. A wonderful establishment!”

“Super cosy oasis along the West Highland Way, we had the Tuna Mediterranean focaccia and the Onion Bhaji wrap, both delicious.”

“Despite sitting right on the West Highland Way, the surroundings are quite grim and not what we were expecting. The sandwiches were tasty and freshly prepared. Google Maps took us up a small single track road which wasn't where the café was, not the fault of the business, but something to be aware of as Turnip the Beet is directly off the A81.”

“The shop is located right in the middle of the trek from milngavie to drymen, the shop holds the cutest souvenirs. Definitely stop here and buy something. Lovely atmosphere. Welcoming service. Didn’t try the food but everything looked super delicious. There is absolutely no wait time, i would say its first come first serve for seating inside, but you can grab a coffee and takeaway food too. The merchandise is worth buying. Even the fridge magnets. Beautiful souvenirs.”

“Amazing food and coffee! Unique items on the menu and perfect for someone looking for something different not the 'same old'. Sausage roll tasted incredible (veggie haggis).”
