About The Ship Inn Melrose
The Ship Inn Melrose is a pub on East Port in Melrose, open daily, with food served every day. The menu includes burgers, among them the Dirty Dog with crispy onions, and haddock and chips. A Sunday roast is also on offer. Seven HD screens show live sport, and a pool game gives patrons something to play between matches. Dogs are allowed inside the pub, so owners can bring them along for a drink or a meal. Tables can be booked online. For a lighter plate, the kitchen makes a baked potato with cheese and homemade coleslaw, which it calls "ship slaw".

Customer Review Summary
Burgers are the most frequent draw, with diners praising the Scotsman, the Sweet Chilli burger and the Dirty Dog with crispy onions. Huge portions of haddock and chips and a baked potato with homemade ship slaw also get credit. Close behind are the Sunday roast and quick, friendly service from staff described as accommodating. Several reviewers mention that dogs are welcome, with one calling the pub more dog tolerant than dog friendly. The large outdoor space and the pool table also come up. Pints such as Bellhaven Best and Greene King Hazy Days are singled out. The criticism is detailed but comes from a minority. One diner describes dry, awful fishcakes, chips that seemed frozen and dry slow cooked beef needing more gravy, and left feeling ripped off. Another was asked to move tables because of an unmarked reserved booking and was charged for an oversized bowl of BBQ sauce. Sport plays on screens throughout without blaring sound.

“A disappointing experience. The service was excellent, lovely staff. My meal was probably the worst I've ever had. The starters were nice enough. I chose the fishcakes as a main meal and they were disgusting. They were really dry and tasted awful, The chips were dreadful- they must have been frozen? The lettuce in the side salad was not fresh. My partner and son selected the slow cooked beef which wasn't too good either. It was too dry and needed more gravy. My other son had a burger which looked good and was much better than the other main meals. Whoever made those fishcakes should be ashamed of themselves.Did someone make them? They seemed like something you'd get in a hospital or prison. Supermarket fishcakes are better. Overall feeling was being ripped off.”

“Cant take anything away from the food, it was fantastic. We both had a burger, the Scotsman and Sweet Chilli one. Excellent meals. The minor criticisms that kept it from a 5 star is we were told to sit at any table without a reserved sign, but shortly after sitting wwre asked to move to another one as this was part of an adjacent large booking. But didn’t have a sign. Simple lack of communication. Also disappointed thst the BBQ sauce was chargeable at £1.30. It was an excessively sized bowl that could have been smaller for free; needless destruction from the overall experience.”

“Very friendly pub with a warm welcome. Superb pint of Bellhaven Best and a piping hot homemade pepperoni pizza. What's not to like for under £20.00 total? I'm a fan already and will visit again next time I'm in the area.”

“Unsure of why they're playing Gabber in the beer garden of a Wednesday night - I certainly don't suffer with indigestion - but it certainly beats anything insipid we've heard a thousand times before, so?! Service was great, all staff were really accomodating, and the undercover beer garden allows vaping. This would be a belting pub to watch the world cup. The Greene King Hazy Days is a really nice pint!”
