“Authentic Libyan food: the flavours, the hospitality - everything was amazing. We visited from the North-East & look forward to coming back again. تسلم الأيادي”

“As a Libyan, I can honestly say that eating at Zoroona is the closest thing you’ll get to being invited into a Libyan family’s home. The food is genuinely authentic—homemade, full of flavour, and prepared with the same care and love you’d expect from a family kitchen. What really makes this place special is the hospitality. The owners are incredibly warm, welcoming, and generous, making every guest feel like part of the family. It’s not just a meal; it’s a true taste of Libyan culture and tradition. If you’re looking for authentic Libyan cuisine, this is the place to go. I couldn’t recommend it more. 10/10!”

“Zoroona is exactly the kind of place Manchester has been missing. From the moment you walk in, it becomes clear this is not just another casual takeaway trying to pass as a restaurant. The service operates at a level you would normally associate with far more expensive dining. Mrs. Aftema, who personally took our order and served the food, delivered an experience that was warm, precise, and genuinely attentive. There is a level of care here that is increasingly rare. You are not treated like a transaction. You are remembered, welcomed, and looked after. The food itself reinforces that same standard. I ordered the Libyan mixed rice, often referred to as wedding rice, served with liver and lamb, roasted almonds, and raisins. The rice was long grain and executed properly, with a subtle but unmistakable presence of cinnamon and clove, exactly as it should be in traditional Libyan cooking. It was balanced, aromatic, and deeply authentic. Alongside it came lightly spiced Libyan pickled vegetables in a clear broth and a fresh salad, both of which complemented the dish without overpowering it. The standout surprise was the stuffed green bell pepper. It carried more heat than expected, particularly for someone who does not typically enjoy spicy food, but it remained controlled rather than overwhelming. The filling was rich, well-seasoned, and clearly prepared with attention to detail. It is the kind of dish that reflects confidence in the kitchen. What makes Zoroona particularly compelling is the consistency between product and experience. During the visit, it was clear that this is a place built on regulars. Customers walk in and are recognized immediately. Orders are anticipated. There is a relationship between the restaurant and its clientele that goes beyond service into familiarity and trust. That dynamic is difficult to manufacture and usually takes years to build. At just under £13 for a full meal including a drink, the value proposition is difficult to challenge anywhere in Manchester, especially when the food is this authentic and the service this refined. Zoroona is not positioned as a high-end restaurant, but it delivers an experience that exceeds that category in the areas that actually matter. For anyone looking for genuine Libyan cuisine, or simply a restaurant where hospitality still carries meaning, this is a place worth supporting. Five stars.”

“Tried Libyan food today and it was seriously underrated. The lamb was tender, and perfectly seasoned. The couscous tasted homemade, and the fresh bread with spicy sauces took everything to another level. Portions were generous without feeling heavy. You can tell the food is made with proper tradition, not just for presentation. Warm atmosphere, good hospitality, and authentic flavors all around. Definitely one of the most unique North African food experiences I’ve had.”

“Had my lunch here yesterday and went back for more today. Yesterday I had couscous which with caramelised onion, chickpeas and lamb for £10. Today I had shakshuka for £8 (eggs, tomato sauce and dry aged beef) along with a small tuna and egg sandwich for £1. Their food has that lovely home made quality. Their home made chilli sauce was great and tubs of frozen sauce are available for £5. Lovely food but I do wish the door to the loo wasn’t open all the time as it’s rather unsightly, especially when having a meal.”

Customer Review Summary
Rice dishes lead the praise at this family owned Libyan kitchen, from the mixed rice with liver, lamb, roasted almonds and raisins to the khalta rice with chicken. Close behind are the stuffed pepper, which one reviewer found hotter than expected, and the couscous with lamb, caramelised onion and chickpeas. Reviewers also name rashta, usban, sharba soup and shakshuka. Lamb and chicken are repeatedly described as tender and not dry, and several mention generous, hearty portions with a homemade quality. Two Libyan reviewers compare the meal to being invited into a family home, and diners consistently mention the warm welcome and friendly staff, with one noting that regulars are recognised the moment they walk in. The one criticism is a sausage whose skin had a thick, strange texture that one diner did not enjoy. Several reviewers single out the fresh bread with spicy sauces, and one praises the homemade chilli sauce so much that they took home a frozen tub.
