Quick info
About Joseph Holt Brewery
Joseph Holt Brewery is a brewery on Empire St in Manchester, and its story spans 170 years. The company manages 126 pubs, and that estate is spread across the North West, which gives the business a regional reach beyond its single brewery address. The brewery keeps to a weekday pattern: it is open Monday to Friday and closed on Saturdays and Sundays, so it does not open at any point over the weekend.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the ales, with Bitter singled out as the best beer and the strong seasonal Sixex called very tasty. Several describe a friendly welcome from staff across the pubs, and one long-standing visitor calls them the cheapest places to eat and drink. Close behind is the food: one party of six with two children was squeezed in on a busy Friday evening and found the kids menu easy to build, with generous portions. Complaints are more varied. One reviewer's Christmas meals arrived without chipolata or stuffing, with two tiny Yorkshires and an overcharge on the receipt. Another says a table request got no reply and the manager shrugged on arrival. A third was told a group of 15 could not reserve. One calls wine and Prosecco prices ridiculous, and one reports verbal abuse from smokers blocking a doorway while leaving. Another reviewer describes a landlady and team who welcomed new residents, making the village pub their favourite local.

“Phoned manageress at the Spinners Rest, Ancoats, to book/reserve a few tables for 15 family members for a birthday meal/drinks. Told no reservations/bookings allowed. Could hardly turn up, 15 in total, without a reservation . Manageress not helpful. Imagine how much the cost of 15 meals, plus drinks, the company lost, as a refusal to take this booking. Ignore the website which tells you to book a function. Went elsewhere”

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Warm Welcome from Elaine and the Black Dog Pub Team Elaine, the landlady of the Black Dog Pub in Belmont Village, deserves the highest praise. From the moment we arrived as new residents, she and her wonderful staff welcomed us with immense warmth and genuine hospitality. The atmosphere they’ve created at the Black Dog is friendly, inviting, and full of community spirit — exactly what every village pub should be. It’s quickly become our favourite local spot and a big part of why Belmont already feels like home. Thank you, Elaine, for making us feel so welcome!”

“I was informed by you out of hrs team that one of your pubs is the Cock o Budworth. I tried to book a table via their online system earlier today. Was intending having Sunday Lunch with my wife, we had been numerous times. The online booking system is supposed to send a confirmation ar decline notice. We waited at home for 45 mins, no notification came through so we decided to take a chance and travel. Upon arrival i was told there was not tables available. I asked why nobody had replied to the booking request and that we had travelled 25mins to get there. I suggested thats not how people expect to be treated. The manager just looked at me and shrugged, no apologies, no reasons, no solution offered.. We left and went to another place where there was tables available and in the hope that the customer service will be better. We went to the Goshawk which has great food and a very good customer service.. Holt Brewery/Cock o Budworth needs to raise its management and customer service profile.”
