About The Cabin Restaurant and Takeaway
On Davies Brae in Mallaig, The Cabin Restaurant and Takeaway is a seafood restaurant with just 28 seats, run by a sole trader. Dogs are welcome inside, so people can dine with their pets. The kitchen works with local meat, fish and shellfish. Mussels come in a large portion, including a version in a garlic and white wine sauce. The menu also lists fish and chips and cullen skink. Other seafood includes calamari, langoustine and monkfish, and there is a fish wrap made with breaded haddock. The restaurant serves no alcohol, but guests can bring their own.

Customer Review Summary
Mussels are the clear draw, praised for their garlic and white wine sauce and described by one diner as the best they have ever had, with huge portions. Fish and chips, the breaded haddock wrap, calamari, langoustine, scampi and monkfish come up close behind, along with callin skink, loaded haggis fries and a vegetable soup. Reviewers repeatedly describe the food as fresh and fast, even when the small room is busy, and several mention friendly, funny servers and a welcoming welcome for dogs. Bringing your own drink is noted by two reviewers, since no alcohol is served. The complaints are specific. One diner found the chips woefully underdone and nearly cold, discovered only after walking back to the car in heavy rain, and another found the mussels a bit too salty and felt the place was more takeaway than restaurant, with tea served with portion milk. One reviewer ordered a plant based burger and another praised the soup, and one says the meal gave pricier seafood restaurants a run for their money.

“Fish was fantastic and crispy, but the chips were woefully underdone. Terribly underdone. Practically cold. Literally ice chips. I only discovered this after I walked a half a mile back to my parking spot. In the rain. In the heavy rain.”

“Incredible food. Cooked to perfection and served hot and fresh. The host (I’m sorry I didn’t get your name, but the one in the maroon shirt) was amazing. Really made the experience 10x better. He was very hardworking, and made sure everyone was tended to despite how busy it was and him being alone. The food was served surprisingly fast despite how busy the joint was. Overall, just an incredible experience and a joyful time. Thank you, and I’ll definitely revisit if I get an opportunity.”
