About Cattle and Smoke
Cattle and Smoke is a Texas-style barbecue restaurant and smokehouse at 158 Evington Rd in Leicester, built around smoked brisket and Nashville chicken. Brisket is served as a meat portion and also in a burger. The Nashville chicken tenders come as a tender box meal with a side and a dip, and diners choose from a range of dips and sides. Pulled beef is served in a sandwich and on loaded chips, and mac and cheese is both a side and a topping for loaded fries. Meals arrive with pink slaw, and platters come with Texas bread. Cutlery is self-service from tins at the table, and the restaurant provides wet wipes in place of napkins.

Customer Review Summary
Pulled beef draws the most praise, whether piled on loaded chips, stuffed into a sandwich or served in a burger, with reviewers describing it as rich and full of flavour and the portions as decent. Close behind are the brisket burger, called succulent, and the Nashville chicken tenders and chicken burger, singled out for their spicy kick. The pink slaw and Texas toast also get nods. The complaints recur, though. Several found food arriving partly cold, including a burger with too much garlic butter on the bun, and a few felt portions were small for what they paid, with one reviewer buying a second portion of brisket. The mac and cheese split opinion. One found it piping hot and a good match for the loaded chips, while others called it overly salty or far too cheesy. A long-time regular says the brisket has turned tough and dry, and that although the serving staff are polite and receptive, the same problems persist.

“⭐ 1/5 — Cattle and Smoke, Leicester Where do I even begin? We ordered the platter for two, which came with brisket, pulled beef, chicken tenders, mac and cheese, pink slaw, chilli cheese bites and Texas bread. Let’s start with the so called Texas bread. I have absolutely no idea what Texas had to do with it. It was basically cold slices of bread and tasted more like Tesco Value bread than anything remotely connected to Texas. I genuinely think plain Tesco bread with nothing on it would have tasted better. Then came the chilli cheese bites. They were cold and basically just full of lumps of cheese. There was hardly anything chilli about them. My daughter took one bite and did not want another one. They were vile. The pink slaw was actually okay. Not too bad. And when the pink slaw is one of the best things on a BBQ platter, you already know you are in trouble. Then we had the mac and cheese. My daughter said it was the cheesiest thing she had ever tasted, and somehow that was not a compliment. It was basically just one huge lump of cheese. That was it. A big lump of what tasted like rotted cheese. Then came the chicken tenders. Oh my God. They tasted like they had been cooked seven days ago and then recooked on Monday. And the batter looked like it had been sitting for the last three years in my granny’s closet. Nothing about them tasted fresh or appetising. They tasted exactly how they looked. Ancient. Then came the brisket. Oh my God again. Me and both my daughters tried it. We each took one bite and that was enough. Me and one of my daughters started feeling sick almost straight afterwards, and we ended up being physically sick. We took one bite, did not touch it again, wrapped it straight back up in its foil where it belonged, and buried it somewhere in the nearest dustbin. It had no taste, it was dry, slimy and ridiculously chewy. It was sliced so thin it looked more like one of those wafer thin turkey slices than brisket. That was not brisket. If someone had told me it was a slice from the bum part of an animal, I would have found that more believable than being told it was brisket. Then there was the pulled beef. Oh my God. The pulled beef looked like somebody had shaved the head off a mop and put it on my plate. I smelled it and immediately put it back down. One of my daughters actually tried it and said it was chewy, hard to cut up and difficult to eat. At that point I would rather have cut my own hair off and eaten that. Nobody wanted it. The meat also had so much fat on it that it was genuinely unpleasant to even look at, never mind eat. And after all of that, the only thing that was actually nice was the Rubicon Mango. Yes. The can of Rubicon Mango. The same Rubicon Mango you can get from practically any off licence, corner shop or supermarket in the UK was comfortably the nicest thing we had. The portion itself was also small for what was supposed to be a platter for two, and communication with the person serving us was very difficult because we could barely understand each other. Clearly, in case anybody has not worked it out by now, I will not be returning. I will not even drive near the restaurant again. I will take a diversion before I get close to it, just in case I have to smell that food again. Other than that, everything else was nice. Which was nothing.”

“I’ve been a loyal regular at this spot for several years, but unfortunately, the quality has noticeably slipped over the last few months. This used to be my go-to for the best brisket in town, but lately, the meat hasn't had that signature tenderness—it’s been a bit tough and dry. Additionally, the Mac & Cheese, which I used to love, has become overwhelmingly salty. I’ve shared this feedback with the serving staff on a few occasions. While they are always polite and receptive, it doesn't seem like the message is making it back to the kitchen, as the issues persist. I really hope they can return to their original standards soon, as it’s a shame to see such a great place underperforming”

“I came this morning 9th April at 11am approx. Ordered brisket burger meal with mac n cheese and a nashville hot chicken burger meal with rustic fries. The brisket burger was unreal! Deffo travelling again from birmingham to here just for that burger alone. The chicken burger was amazing too! Mac n cheese wasn't too bad either but overall the service was quick and staff was very welcoming. Deffo recommend coming here 👌 Very clean establishment.”

“I recently ordered take-away from Cattle and Smoke, and it was an amazing experience! The Nashville chicken tenders were fantastic—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. They truly set the tone for a great meal. I also tried the loaded Nashville chicken tenders bowl with pulled beef, and it was delicious! The combination of the tender chicken and savory pulled beef created a mouthwatering dish that I couldn’t get enough of. The pulled beef with chips was another highlight—rich and satisfying, it paired perfectly with the crispy chips. Each bite was packed with flavor and left me wanting more. To top it off, the pink slaw was nice, adding a refreshing crunch that complemented the richness of the other dishes. I also had the Nashville Chicken Burger, which was nice and spicy, adding an enjoyable kick to the meal. The Nashville tender box meal was delicious, featuring: 4 Nashville tenders 1 side and 1 dip (I went with the buffalo sauce) I chose chips Texas toast added The combo was delicious and very satisfying! Additionally, I tried the Just Meats large meal, where I went with brisket and pulled beef (you only get one meat in the meal, but you can add extra meat at an additional cost). This meal comes with two sides, and I chose chips and onion rings, which were lovely. The pink slaw and Texas toast that came with the meal were nice touches as well. For my dip, I chose buffalo. Overall, Cattle and Smoke offers a wonderful selection of hearty and flavorful take-away options. I highly recommend stopping by to try the Nashville chicken tenders, the loaded bowl, and the various combo meals—you won’t be disappointed!”

“We were in Leicester for the day, and decided to try cattle and smoke, after hearing the hype on social media. It definitely lives up to the hype and the food is of a quality standard. The pulled beef burger bursts with flavour, and the loaded chips topped with pulled beef are just perfect. The portion sizes are decent too, making it a satisfying meal. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit!”
