Quick info
About Lupe's Cantina
Lupe's Cantina is a family-run Mexican restaurant on Cardigan Rd in Leeds, open since 2016. The menu centres on tacos, with Tacos Al Pastor among them, and chicken and beef empanadas sit alongside. Enchiladas de Mole Negra bring mole to the table, and the guacamole comes with freshly fried tortilla chips and two sauces. Plates are made for sharing and come out as they are ready, so dishes arrive in stages rather than all at once. A dessert menu follows, and the drinks list includes a hibiscus drink and cocktails, which arrive in clay pots. Food is served on patterned plates. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Sundays and Mondays. Vegan options are available, and dishes can be adapted.

Customer Review Summary
The caveats are mostly about ordering. One reviewer found the rice water too sweet and watery, said the pork tacos tasted like chicken, and found the milk cakes sold out. Staff speak Spanish and menu items are in Spanish, so that reviewer advises clarifying orders, since theirs was almost wrong. Another says dishes arrive as they are ready, which wasn't explained beforehand, and found the salsas more liquid than chunky. One reviewer wanted clearer signage for entering from the car park, and another says the plates are more for sharing, so order plenty. One reviewer's starter arrived sizzling.

“10/10. So tasty and friendly staff. Can’t wait to return to try more of the menu. The prawns were my favourite.”

“We came on a Wednesday around 6pm, spaces do get filled up real quick. You just find a table and sit yourself down. Everything was so yummy, except the rice water - that was way too sweet and not much depth, it just tasted like rice and watery milk. Highly recommend the empanadas, my friend had the chicken empanadas and the seasoning profile on that was so unique, a mix of chocolate and rich nutty flavour. The beef empanadas had a hint of spice, super tender. I’d prefer the chicken one for the unique flavour. The tacos tasted like Dorito crisps, this is not saying it isn’t good, they have similar seasoning. Although we asked for pork tacos, we felt it was chicken. Milk cakes were sold out :( The staffs speak Spanish and the dishes are in Spanish, so make sure you clarify your orders - they almost got our orders wrong.”

“I had such a fantastic meal here. Every dish was packed with authentic flavor and presented beautifully on those colorful patterned plates. The tacos were a real standout, especially with the fresh toppings. I was also blown away by the dessert, which was topped with fresh slices of strawberry. I cannot wait to come back.”

“Really enjoyed my visit to Lupe's Cantina. It's a cosy little spot serving authentic Mexican food at very reasonable prices. We tried the Tacos Al Pastor, Tacos de Carne, Tacos Ensenada, Enchiladas de Mole Negra and Pastel de Tres Leches. The standout dish was definitely the Tacos Al Pastor – packed with flavour and served on excellent corn tortillas. Very juicy and perfect with lime. The Carne tacos were also delicious, while the Ensenada fish tacos were fresh and light. The Enchiladas de Mole Negra was delicious not too rich as I initially expected. Everything felt surprisingly light and didn't leave me feeling overly full. Overall, great value, lovely atmosphere, and authentic flavours. I'd happily recommend Lupe's Cantina and will definitely be back to try more traditional Mexican dishes.”

“Great little diner with a great selection of food and drinks. The cocktails were tasty too. Service was friendly and food presentation was really eye catching. More sharing plates than main dishes so make sure you order plenty.”
